I also would love to see Mr. Smith Goes To Washington 1939 come to Blu-ray, if just to have the "best of 1939" complete on blu-ray. To me it is easily the single greatest year in the entire history of movies. I've always felt that just between Gone With the Wind 1939 and The Wizard Of Oz 1939 alone that it's kinda like having a "soft drink contest" and having both Coca Cola and Pepsi together on the same side! It's just not even fair to the rest of the field
![]() But there's also several 50's and early 60's films that I'd love to see on blu-ray... Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1953 Creature From The Black Lagoon 1954 (I've still never been able to find out what the true original theatrical aspect ratio of this one was...) The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg 1964 The Endless Summer 1966 Jaws 1975 and that's just off the very top of my head... When I think of my current personal favorite 100 films or so, MOST of them are "classic". That is, before the 80's, if not well before the 80's! So I really am looking forward to MOST of my blu-ray purchases being "classic" rather than newly made... In fact, I might be crazy or not very "in style" but I'm one of the fools who believes blu-ray was meant for the classic movies, more so than just newer movies! Of course, I'll take ANY movie on blu-ray above any other (mass produced) option but, speaking personally, new movies with too-quick pacing and tons of special effects aren't "necessary" for me to see on blu-ray. I can take them or leave them on any format. But, The Wizard Of Oz, The Searchers, North By Northwest, Gone With the Wind, Last Year at Marienbad - now THOSE are films that I've been grateful to finally see on blu-ray in all their timeless glory where they were meant to be seen! Well, if the theatre is no longer an option... I definitely (though I'm in the likely minority) believe that its the "old" films that are most naturally suited/meant for blu-ray! At least in theory. Just simply due to their typically richer inherent resolution (use of actual film) and the more playful/vivid/artistic use of colors (technicolor specifically) and more "intimate" cinematography back in those days. That's just my thoughts and preferences anyways... Last edited by Popcorn_Bliss; 03-29-2010 at 02:39 AM. |

This is screaming for a BD release. Of course, we'll never see the full version which has been lost, but the theatrical edition was restored for a beautiful DVD a few years ago and I can't imagine how good a Blu-Ray would look.
Although the pacing may not be interesting, I'd love to show some kids today what crowd scenes with thousands of real people really looked like, as opposed to the copy/paste CG crowds of today. |

Creature From The Black Lagoon 1954
Seconded along with many other classic horror/sci-fi titles from Universal and others. For starters:
and many more in that vein! ![]() |

Agreed, though mainly Sunset Blvd is what I'm waiting for, and Double Indemnity.
I want some Bette Davis on blu! Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Now Voyager and All About Eve spring to mind. Other than that: A Streetcar Named Desire - This one has its 60th Anniversary next year, and Warner do great with their classic re-releases, here's hoping for one then! I watched this again recently and it's definitely one of my favourites of all time. I'd love to see Citizen Kane as well, it's so often cited as 'The Best Film of All Time' it is just screaming for a BD release... 12 Angry Men as well. I guess not many of these are known for their amazing visuals (except Kane, perhaps) so I'm not sure how long they'll take... When it comes to the more modern era, I'm also waiting on Cabaret and the rest of the Disney animated classics. |
