I currently have the Monster PowerCenter AV800 protecting my A/V equipment and it has been doing a good job so far, but something happened early am this morning.
The power company is working in our neighborhood on replacing powerlines and they have been digging and pulling cables almost all week at my neighbors across the street. During that time we have had occasional power blibs, but nothing serious. This morning though (I was asleep, but this is according to my girlfriend) there was an other powerblib; though no one was actually outside working on anything. It was very short -- a couple of seconds perhaps -- but it triggered the Monster powerstrip. The thing is that I am no longer able to get the powerstip to turn on. Normally, when you hit the on/off switch, it would "click" in one position or another, and you would feel a little bit of resistance while doing so. But now, the switch feels extremely loose and does not stay in an on position. I feel no clicks and no resistance at all -- whatsoever. I have unplugged it, hit the reset button, but no joy. Does anyone here have any ideas? I only had about 10 minutes time this morning before having to go to work, so I did not unplug ALL devices from the switch. The test I used was plugging a lamb into the switch (no go) and then plugging the lamp in the wall socket. According to one of my coworkers, I could have a short in one of my "devices" hooked up to the switch, which in turn prevents the whole strip from turning on. If that indeed the case, would that also exhibit that behavior with the on/off switch? The components hooked up to the swith are all very recent. A Plasma 50" Panasonic, an Onkyo 805, a PS3, nintendo Wii, Comcast cable box and a 400-disc CD changer. I just can't believe any of these devices would have a "short-circuit". The powerstrip in question is a relative cheap strip. (around 50 bucks). http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=594 Last edited by GreenMotion; 10-31-2007 at 12:18 PM. |

I doubt that any of your devices have short-circuited, its the surge protectors job to prevent that! What could have happened is that the surge protector didnt trip properly and blew a circuit/ fuse internally. I would check all the components by plugging them into the wall and then unplug (of course

I am a true fan of monsters power centers and battery backup systems i have a Monster HTS 5100 and a HTS 2500 along with a HTFS 1000 and i have at one time or another had problems with them and Monster just gives me an RMA # i ship it back and then i receive a brand new one in original packaging . You dont need a receipt to take advantage of the warranty for this product . On another note i was reading what you have hooked up to this piece and i think you might want to upgrade , but just an opinion . Give monster a call they will help you , hell my HTFS 1000 had the same problem and i bought it from Ebay and they replaced it .

Im looking to upgrade as well, but I'm thinking about getting a power conditioner instead. They also provide excellent surge protection and a little extra piece of mind for all the expensive equipment I have hooked up to it! I don't know that they are necessary, but I'll likely be getting one in the future.

A buddy of mine that used to work at Tweeter and went through Panamax training. He said they shocked a Monster hts3500 with 20,000 volts and it just blew up and caught on fire. Then they did the same thing to a $100 Panamax power center nothing happened. And if you read the Monster power bar manual it is recommended you unplug it from the wall during any lighting storm. Monster Power is just like Bose, it's overpriced crap. |

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Situations like this make you rethink the importancy of these powerstrips.
I did contact monster (by email) and they told me to call in so they could give me an RMA number. It seems they will exchange the defective one for a brand new one. No fuzz. Just like some of you already mentioned. I must admit, that is pretty darn cool. They may be overpriced, but that is excellent service. I am going to send the defective unit in, but I have also ordered the HTS 1000 MKIII from Amazon. It should be here tomorrow and I am going to use it instead for the time being. I do want to upgrade to those even nicer, more professional ones (like some of you have), but I just can't spot 600 bucks for one of those right now. So I will have to settle with the HTS 1000 MKIII . (140 bucks). Definitely beats the AV800 though!. |

When ever a power company is doing something like that ,unplug EVERYTHING turn off the brakers.
There IS a limit to what any power proctor will do. One of my uncles rentels last year, PG&E was doing the same thing, well it ended up costing him about $10k+, The A/C got cooked, stove, oven, dishwasher, garages door & some more gone + the renters lost equipment to about $3k & this happend to about 12 house. |
