I’ve seen the Blu-ray as they sent it to me to approve and I looked at the film and it looks fantastic on Blu-ray but I don’t know the date.
Since he has seen and approved it, I guess we shouldn't get our hopes up for improved PQ when the EE's are released.

I think a more uniform look would make sense from a directors point of view.

Oh come on the bluray does not look like that. If you really believe that not even Gangs looked like that. If it would look like that the reviewers giving it bad reviews would have given it half star in PQ

Paul and Adam plese tell us that this picture is complete false on how it looks?

A more uniform look for all 3 movies WOULD make sense if all 3 movies didn't have different production and post-production work/budgets and all 3 films had been shot on the same kind of camera.

Alright, I just want to make sure I know what’s going on….b/c I’ve for the most part stayed out of this thread since a release date was announced b/c it was always “no extended cuts, no sale” and “I’ll be waiting for the EE’s” posts.

The pq on these is not reference but they are better than what Gladiator has…..is that right???

Don't forget, these films made for less than mediocre DVDs before, stands to reason the blu-rays might not be reference either.
There aint any DNR on the original NEGATIVE.

The only thing preventing this from looking much better is $$$$. Lots of them. Look at The Wizard of Oz and many other examples.

It seem to depend who you are asking.

Group A seem to think that it's not as bad as it's being said and the PQ while not incredible is still interesting

Group B think that it's horrible and some even mention that the HDTV showing of the movies on TBS and others are looking better then the Blu-ray

Group C as not much opinion as they are waiting for the EE

Yeah I'm no expert (or self-proclaimed one!), but I never once thought during that section of the film felt that it looked THAT bad! So yes, I would say that that screenshot is not from the version of the film that I own.

Its probably worth noting that one prerequisite of Group B is that you haven't actually seen the BLu-ray in action. This is not a patch on the terribleness of GoNY. I've not actually seen Gladiator, so can't comment on that, but a friend of mine, who owns Gladiator has seen my copy of Fellowship and doesn't have a problem with it.

We didn't see the original negative in the theaters, however.

FOTR (and the other two films) were fed into a computer, digitally composited, graded and color timed, before being output again as film, so there is legitimate doubt about how "mind blowing" these films could look. It may well be that those who expect these to be reference quality are remembering the theatrical presentations through rose-colored hindsight.

hmmm
But our own reviewer has said that DNR has been applied and how funny that DNR is shown in that screenshot.

More screencaps, this time from Xylon over at HDD. Look at how DNR on the BD wipes out the detail from their faces.

Ken says FotR is a 2.5/5, but that less sensitive fewers will be pleased with the transfer.

He says TTT and RotK are 4/5 (3.75 for TTT actually) and the overall consensus seems to be that those two look quite good, though they do have problems.

If these were choices I remember having with tests in one notorious undergrad class, there would be three more:

Group E: Two of the above
Group F: All of the above
Group G: None of the above

I must've missed this:

What happened to the screenshots in this reviewer's review?

And I'm Group E, a small group probably:
I think it doesn't look that bad, even though I expected it to be better like everyone else did.
But I'm also still waiting for another release. lol

Also, it doesn't really depend who you ask, cause if you ask people what it looks like you usually get opinions.
The transfers are also what they are, and that's either better or worse than other ones.
And, this is not my opinion, I can clearly see the 'The Lord Of The Rings'-films are better.
Cause 'Gladiator' looks even blurrier and just... not as good, as everyone can see.

But keep in mind, that it's based on screenshots, which I actually find to show the differences best.
However, there's a chance they might be produced differently.
I've seen screenshots before of other BDs which just look terrible,
while the reviews about the quality were really positive.
So I take it sometimes screenshots are just terribly compressed or some issue like that.

Warner Bros. requested that reviewers use studio approved/provided images for the reviews.
