Digitalbath, the soundtrack is a Dts master audio 5.1 matrix track, the confusion around the 6.1 is that allthough the soundtrack is 5.1 the effect of an extra channel is created using the rear speakers, this is where the matrix part comes in,but it's not an extra channel, some amps and recievers can do this to any 5.1 track using their "DTS ES" "DOLBY EX" or "THX EX" settings.

You misunderstand 6.1 ES has another channel thats why it's called 6.1,your question was why was the LOTR track 5.1 when you thought it was a 6.1 track.
My answer was because the track was a Dts 5.1 matrix track,so it's in the middle of these the 5.1 and 6.1 formats,as it creates the sence of a extra channel, without there actualy being one using the rear speakers. And my point about the recievers is correct,my onkyo will take any 5.1 track and convert it to 7.1 using its Dolby THX EX mode, even if the It's a Dts 5.1 track,it will not however convert in this way if the Dts track is a 6.1 ES track, asyou can only apply the other THX modes to this ie THX cinema,or as i always use THX ultra,as they are not Dolby modes. |

Just looked at the DTS site ,yes it is a little confusing ie DTS 6.1 matrix and discreate, although the LOTR is DTS 5.1 matrix,so i think thats the answer.
My reciever only shows it to be a 5.1 track, but as i said using my THX ultra mode, sound comes through all 7 speakers. Looking into this more a 6.1 matrix is a 5.1 track,it's just that it can be encoded as part of a 6.1 discreate track which has 7 channels, although the Dts site is not that clear on this. We watched the first film last night, on our 48 inch Plasma and PS3. I specifically went into the screening without mentioning any of the alleged problems to the three other people watching the film with us (my missus, brother and his girlf), in an attempt to gauge the reaction of someone unfamiliar with the idea that this was a faulty release in some way.
Not one person mentioned anything. Not one person picked up any issues whatsoever with the image quality. Not one. In any instance. In fact, my brother actually raved about the general quality, and joked about how he would be going out and buying it this afternoon. So yes, after conducting this highly scientific experiment I can confirm that normal people love this release. ![]() |

I can confirm that I'm not normal then
![]() ![]() I had a friend popping by, who received the set saturday. I'm living in Denmark, so I don't know how strict the release date is upheld here. Well, we only demoed the Fellowship of the Ring on the setup below. Projector is a JVC HD1 with new bulb and the screen 104" brilliant Carrada screen and the room 100% light controlled. ![]() I concur with observations, that the transfer is NOT as problematic as the Gladiator release, a release i personally would rate 4/10 on a large screen. The Gladiator release has so many things going against it, I would prefer to watch the DVD upscaled. The bad things outweighs the good things. Fellowship of the Ring however, is one strange movie to watch. The quality varies very much, from quite good and tolerable HD to waxy and clean with no details in organic material. I can guarantee, that this is not a HD worthy experience compared with "what is in the market and what we know HD can be". I regard FOTR the very best of the three movies, my favorite fantasy movie and I absolutely COULD enjoy it, had this not been the HD release everyone has been waiting for and had I watched it on my smaller TV set. The reviews from Hometheaterforum, Hometheatershack, blu-ray.com and Highdefdigest all hits the nail with their criticism of the transfer and the viewing experience. It's not worthy! Video: 5-6/10 |

If you want to pay an extra $15 for a letter opener, go ahead and buy the sword edition. Most of us here, who are buying it, are trying to spend as little as possible because of the preceived problems with FOTR. |

To answer your question, though, if they do release them separately, and a short amount of time has passed, it will definitely be the same master. If it's a couple of years, there is a better chance they will try to master it again. |

Sir, stop spreading BS on these forums. Not all disks will be from the SAME source. I would especially avoid the batch from Alliance films, which are always sub-par tansfers. They always try to flood the market with their cheap blu-rays. Becarefull folks, a film like LOTR will have lots of fraudsters waiting to pounce on unsuspecting comsumers with crappy disks. |

I just cancelled my pre-order today. I'll end up purchasing it when the extended editions come out or if this set becomes available as a great deal.

I diasagree with you Jwbbud, i don't beleive the tansfer process is as clean cut as you've stated. It will vary from place to place and from country to country for the cost control reasons as some else stated on this baord. This is exactly why the quality of films like Gladiator was all over the place. Different reproductions souces, qulaity control teams and so on. I know some that work in the industry and that's just the way it works. But it's ok to disagree. In the end, people should still be carefull when buying any blu-ray disks not only LOTR, the margins on this product is very lucartive and many studios will try to sueeze as much as possible from unsuspecting consumers. |

Missing spears, disappearing arrows and fireballs, copious amounts of EE made it almost unwatchable to me. Fellowship is not as bad as Gladiator. There are times when it looks like an upscaled dvd but it is very watchable. If anyone enjoyed Gladiator they will definately enjoy Fellowship. Those with larger screens will be annoyed. |
