I'd imagine that even among the majority of people reading the IGN review, only a minority of them would know what DNR stands for and only a fraction of that minority would be able to see it and recognize it.... and that's a video game site. I see some peolpe asking what it is on this forum and this is a home theater A/V site that caters only to that tiny demographic.
I think they must've stepped their game up after their review fiasco.

Pretty much all of the comments from that review page points out all of the problems with the wrongful review and the PQ problems with the Blu-ray.

If you can watch all 3 in one day, you are a better person than I am. Just too much material.

Interesting thought, but I would have a difficult time imagining Bombadil creating the seven fathers of the dwarves and then almost literally hammering them out of existence.

I can't do the Photobucket thing at work but you should be able to find scenes of Patton that make not noticing it impossible.

For this movie look at this:

http://comparescreenshots.slicx.com/comparison/43821

When you put your cursor over it you'll be seeing the old HDTV version. When you pull the cursor off of it you'll be seeing the new BD version.

On the BD version fine facial details have been scrubbed away entirely, giving his face a waxy, clay-like appearance that's ultra-uniform and not lifelike. It looks odd, like a wax statue. Especially bad considering this old HDTV broadcast shot actually resolves more fine detail than a 2K10 BD release, but you can see what DNR does to fine detail in this BD shot.... there's another shot of Gandalph where fine details (like strands of hair in his beard) have been scrubbed out or mushed together.

Not the greatest example in the world, but pretty easy to see none the less.

Holy crap, its kind of scary. I see what you mean though, the blu ray almost washes away the design on Bilbos vest.

The omission of the extended editions on this release has really turned nasty, the last thing they (the studio) was video quality being compromised. Honestly, i never had a problem with this relase being only the theatrical ones. My motto was always if you don't want them don't buy them. The a/v quality of the blu-ray is a different altogether story though and it sems that this too will turn ugly for the studio. Anyway, it seems that sales aren't going as expected and it's going to hurt them in the wallet. Maybe they should have thought of that before and spent a little more time/money trying to put out the best they could and on feedback from their customers. It's a shame they didn't to do neither properly and instead went for the fat profit margins. Later people and as always "buyer beware".

As far as anyone forcing blu-ray.com to remove posts, I can tell you that it's 100% untrue. I'll take the above post (by BigT) with a "boulder of salt".

thanks mjbethancourt, I typically appreciate your posts and glad you feel the same way in regards to different people being different in preferences in regards to many aspects of home theaters (or a TV's ).

Or maybe your monitor isn't up to snuff. I can see the design just fine on the BD version.

On the BD, I see different gamma & color values, no vertical stretching, and no MPEG noise artifacts/edge enhancement.

The DNR is blatant in that shot........you dont see Bilbo turn into a wax figure in the blu ray? The HDTV version clearly has more fine detail and the blu ray has clearly been "dnr doctored". Bilbo looks ~15 years younger in the blu ray version and just has that fake waxy DNR look in general.

There's some DNR, but it doesn't make everyone look "waxy". I can still see details, I also don't see the layer of noise, artifacting and EE that comes with lower bitrate MPEG2.

Then again I have a calibrated 10-bit professional monitor.

Not sure what he was posting about, but he even got the name of the studio wrong. Just so you guys know, the administrators here are very respectful of the members. No one has given out "special instructions" for the moderation of this thread.

Exactly. Why did they feel the need to apply DNR to the blu ray? Makes Bilbo look less real and more wax figure like (or however you would describe his look in the blu ray in relation to the HDTV broadcast) IMO. The blu ray should be better than its HDTV counterpart in EVERY category and that is clearly (no pun intended) not the case when it actualy looks worse (atleast in this particular area) due to the application of DNR.

Do you think they will stick to that "coincide with the hobbit" extended edition release date.

anybody know if BB's steelbook special offer was for "pre-orders" only or can you walk in and buy it if it's available? I ask because at the site there is no listing of any "steelbook" versions.

They never set that "date", that is nothing but speculation from the fans.
