[QUOTE=Kryptonic;3120112]The softness in FOTR has everything to do with the source and the DI process originally used in post-production on the film and absolutely nothing to do with the encoding on the disc. I saw the film 17 times in theaters. I know what it's supposed to look like and this surpasses what I experienced in a variety of different theaters 8 years ago.
This is nonesense, of course a Blu-ray version is going to be better then what was seen in theaters (it has to or what's the purpose for blu?). The real question here is what the hell the studios did for the transfer? Did they re-master from the original flim stock or did they use an existing master (like the one from the dvd release) and tinker (dnr, edge...etc.) with it? There is stuff i'm being told that can't confirm either story. Also, like i had predicted, the opinions on the PQ is all over the place. WHY? Becuase not all the disks are reproduced from the same place or company, aside the fact thay MAYBE they didn't re-master from the original film. If the studio is trying to pass off an upconverted dvd quality disk as a high qulaity blu-ray release then there's a problem here. That's basically the nuts and bolts of this quagmire. In addition, people can't compare the quality of this release (or any other) from one person to another, you have to do the comparison yourselves. Trying to compare your experience to another's is a defeating purpose in itself, too many variables that affect the end result. Some questions people should start to ask is, "is this one of the best transfers in MY collection and what are some of the bit rates (not totally reliable but this is another story) people are getting with LOTR? Like i keep on harping buyer beware and becarefull from you buy and from whom. |

Well,
I don't want to look much at that chart. 1080p is the standard and will be for a while. If you got a 720p set at a big discount so be it. No need to think much about it, If you want the best there is today then get 1080p. Seems like a thread in Home Theater General instead of a LotR thread. -Brian |

It's got screen sizes, seating distances, and resolutions.
I have no use for it... It may be "interesting" I suppose. No combination of screen size and distance would make me want to watch DVD instead of Blu Ray. 1440p is not available as far as I know for a home video format. And apart from 1080p Blu Ray also has a better color space than DVD so 480p, 720p,... forget them.. Go 1080p already whatever your setup is. -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 04-06-2010 at 05:05 PM. |

Shockwave,
No... in this case, I'm not trying to be funny. I don't see any purpose for the chart you posted. I can not see any way to "use" it either. Maybe that's just me. If you are stuck with DVD and want to push your seating back to the point where there is no benefit from 1080p then go by the chart. If you want to sit close enough to get the goods from 1440p then have at it. What are you using for source though? -Brian |

Maybe I am not understanding what is going on which is most likely the case. I use the chart to set my distance for 1080P. I have a 60 inch screen so I have my distance with in that gap on the chart.
What do you mean by source? |

What I got out of Bhampton's post is that chart is not going to effect his seating position nor his TV purchase because there are other factors that take priority. Most people will want to get a 1080p TV over a 720p because that's what is available to them and the price difference is not that big. They will establish their seating position based on the room they are using to set up their TV and how pleasing to the eye the furniture configuration turns out, not because the chart says sit x feet from the screen.

Didn't really think the chart would make someone buy a certain TV over the other. I posted it because people were saying the 1.5, which is what the chart tries to help with. Someone posted there is wiggle room in the 1.5 formula so I posted to chart to ask if the chart adjusted for wiggle room. It was no way posted to suggest 1080P vs 720 or DVD vs Blu Ray or how people would adjust their rooms.
