Default U2's setlist dilemmas

REM did this for a long time. They just decided that they wouldn't play almost anything from their early albums. Which are probably the best albums made consecutively in my lifetime.

Stipe even said not long ago that he kind of regretted being so pig-headed about it.

Not everyone gets to see a U2 show live and many others may get to see them once or twice and not again.

No Blu-ray will ever match the feeling I got seeing them at Sundevil stadium, so I'm not sure that's really valid-live is live. Suck it up, bite your tongues, and definitely rotate the songs while on tour, but there are some songs people just expect and they really should play them almost every night. With or Without You, Pride, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Mysterious Ways, One, and Where The Streets Have No Name are a few that come to mind. Certainly they can find a way to keep things fresh when they have another 20 or so songs to choose each night that can be changed up more freely.

Just my opinion, but I think the when you're a U2 or REM, you can live in a bubble and not really think about the average fan who might be seeing them once or only getting to see them on their home theaters.

I agree with Veronica Mars for the most part. I'm being presumptuous by speaking for all fans but I'll say we all want want to hear, WOWY, Pride, WTSHNN, One, Mysterious Ways; I'll even say, Bad, Beautiful Day, Walk On, Angel of Harlem, SYCMIOYO, Miracle Drug, all of which were made to be sung live and a few others.

The problem comes from a setlist of maybe 20-23 songs (on average) and the necessity of playing all their most-loved hits, plus a good amount of songs from their newest album (this time NLOTH) to promote it and then 3-4 wildcard songs to vary the set from night to night. I think it's very likely they may get bored of the setlists deep into the tour, but they do suck it up because they always play WTSHNN, One & Pride (here in the States). I'll admit I'd be a little disappointed if they didn't play Pride so if they didn't play it at your show, I hear ya. I guess what I'm saying is it must be difficult in deciding what NOT to play an any given night.
