I didn't want to go through so many pages so sorry if this has been answered already. I got the FS steelbook if it makes a difference but I thought this was supposed to be DTS-HD MA 6.1 but I am only getting 5.1. It does say 6.1 on the slip of the SB though?

I am bitsreaming from an opp BDP-83 to a Marantz SR8002 if that helps.

The Best Buy nearest me still has the LOTR display stand almost full as well as plenty of stock on the shelf.

Barnes and Nobel is also selling it for $99 with a 10% discount.

AVS forum is where self-proclaimed "videophiles" go to compare dicks. I see it as about a hundred clones of the Simpsons Comic-Book-Guy all jockeying to see who can be the biggest jerk, and the occasional hapless enthusiast wandering in and getting flamed. Thinking you're too cool to be helpful, or even civil, does not make one an expert.

By contrast, here we have insiders, industry professionals, serious enthusiasts, casual consumers, film-buffs, etc., all participating in a generally constructive and helpful way, to share knowledge and spirited opinions to the overall benefit of blu-ray users of all types. Yeah, we got some bad apples, but they are few and usually get the boot.

If you ask me, I say choads of a feather should flock together... over there, not here.

It's #14 on Amazon's bestseller list. Behind "Dexter: Season 4" & "Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred"?? I'm sure the cost has some effect on its ranking but I thought it would be higher.

Amazon sales for the set are affected by the aggressive pricing of Target and Best Buy. Amazon had it priced for $64 most of the week.

If there's one thing 'The Silmarillion' tells, it is that elves are far from perfect, and that they in fact have a disgraceful past that is a heavy moral burden upon them. The ugliness of their past is apparent in their general attitude of depression and despair.

Elves have no fondness for mankind, and would rather just leave Middle-Earth and all its problems behind. For the most part, they really don't give a damn if Sauron rules all of humanity and Middle-Earth. Elrond himself says so, in FotR, that there is no way he can pursuade the elves as a whole to get involved, since they all have the option of just bailing and forgetting about Sauron, (with the exception of Galadriel, who participated in a genocide and is an exile, unwelcome in Valinor until after Sauron was defeated).

Elves are, as a rational consequence, cowards:
They don't have to die, they can live forever as long as they don't get killed in battle or something. If you could live forever, provided you avoided fights, I think most people would be cowards. That's the big knock on elves: what a mortal would call courage, an elf would call foolhardy.

That being said, those elves who did stay around and fight, are all that much more courageous, because they have so much more to lose, and they have a choice to just leave. That is why I like Peter Jackson bring some elves to Helm's Deep, that action redeems the elves quite a lot in my eyes.

This is an excellent counter point of view of the elves, and worthy of further consideration at least. There is a rationale in your post that makes sense.

Well, Pete, it is a 'Lord of the Rings' thread, it's bound to happen.

I'd hate to think anybody would equate awesome literature like LotR to pulp like 'Twilight'. They're not in the same league at all.
