This is Toshiba's last grasp. Here is the kicker, they can move a ton of these units, but if the buyers don't start buying HD DVD disks (or more importantly WB HD DVD disks) they will loose anyway.

Well I disagree. Studios are interested in one thing, cash in their pocket, anything else is useless and meaningless, if they are making $$$ they will support 50 formats, as long as they make money. If Toshiba's strategy works (that is if they can dump enough crap on to the market), then WB and even other studios will look at this as an increased market base from which to sell their wares and they will simply continue to support HD-DVD, they won't even look at point in time software sales, that won't mean anything. Remember, the HD-DVD strategy has changed over the past year, they are no longer in it to win, they just want to survive and "co-exist". I want to see that group and that format dead and if I were the BDA I would being doing everything possible at this point to kill the competing format, they just don't seem to be doing much of anything at the present.

Playstation was never drowned over by Nintendo 64--- PS1 is the second most successful selling gaming console ever---FACT

Playstation 2 has sold over 120mil and counting units. PS2 is the most successful selling gaming console ever!!!!---FACT

Sony INVENTED the Compact Disc---CD for the layperson (who are many on this thread)

AND COMING SOON ---PS3's remarkable sales milestones it will achieve along with Blu-ray as the #1 HD format!!!!!!!!!!

Stop bashing Sony you trolls, why don't you guys go and watch your hddud's with composite cables on your hddud players before there are a dollar item on you garage sale table.

They are in BETA mode. They are counting on the quality over quantity thing just like Sony did with Beta when VHS came on the scene. Big mistake....everyone knows Beta was superior to VHS. Didn't matter. I keep saying it's a marathon not a sprint. The more HD-DVD players sold, the less people will be interested in Blu. So people saying HD-DVD players will be door stops might look like Deer in Headlights when their Blu players become the same. They should be careful because karma is a b1tch. I think BDA needs a lower cost player ASAP....

Mod note: For the millionth time, Beta quality for pre-recorded movies was exactly the same for prerecorded VHS movies: 486i vertical lines x 240 lines horizontal resolution x 1.33 aspect ratio recorded on 1/2" tape. HD DVDers have taken the ball and ran with that fud as a predictor of Blu-ray failing. You know what? that means that for spreading FUD, THEY READILY ACCEPT hd dvd is an inferior format!

This whole thing is running the same course almost as Beta although the major plus this time is that Blu-Ray has more studio support whereas beta had just Sony basically at the time. If the BDA continues to think avg joe's want to spend money on a component other than their TV they are nuts. Just won't happen...While the HD-DVD players are junk, they still work and are still an upgrade to DVD that will work on their sparkling new $1999 HDTV's. They'll be happy with it and their new Transformers HD-DVD for the kiddies.....

Wow, even the HD DVD sales are dead on arrival. We know few of these players are in stock to begin with. This storm is just a lot of wind. Little threat to blu-ray with those stock numbers. Kudos to the sales girl for knowing it was last years model and only did 1080i.

Toothless dog people. Move along, nothing to see here. Move along.

I think they will eventually replace DVD, just as Hi definition TVs and the like eventually replaced SD-definition TVs... just the natural course of things.

In other words, they came in to buy an HD player, first saw the $99 one and then thought; come hell or high water, they are going to get one. Hope this isn't happening at other retailers and I am hopeful its only isolated.

Best buy online shows them as sold out, and not available for store pick-up.

I guess you should have been there. I listen well and cross-examine people on the record for a living, if that helps.

Classic Bait and switch tactic.

Advertise a cheap product that you know you do not have in quantities (with very fine prints: Limited to product in stocks), and then hope that because the client came in to buy your cheaper product, he'll still come home with the higher priced version.

Hopefully tht 'll come right back at em with people getting p'ed off and buying Blu Ray units intead.

yeah i'm actually kind of worried to post some of my comments now after seeing people getting banned simply for saying something bad about blu-ray. just because we prefer blu-ray doesn't mean we have to agree with everything they do or not side with hd dvd on something.

i love blu-ray, but that shouldn't mean i have to spout blu-ray only from my mouth...does it?
