Agree some people will love it, some will hate it, I bought it (haven't opened it), but figure I'll judge it for myself

I guess everyone is different but I don't get why people are
content with the PQ on FOTR

The films were released so close together and yet there is a
huge diff. between the first and the other two.

Personally if The other 2 have PQ of 5 then I just can not
see FOTR being more than 2.5/3 and that is generous

As far as I am cocerned they should go back and improve
even if it is a massive effort like Star Trek TOS

I just watched The Two Towers last night. It was absolutely amazing. Probably one of the best transfers I've ever seen. The sound was tear inducing.

While watching Fellowship, I guess I didn't see much of an issue other than the occasional waxy face, but after seeing the immense detail and clarity of TTT, it's pretty apparent that we were screwed on Fellowship's transfer.

Ah well, I like the last two movies more anyway.

Best Buy released them at $60. The regular price will be $84.00.
Buy it today before it goes back to the regular price!

Btw, I watched FOTR and half of TTT last night, (just too tired to complete the two) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As many have already indicated, it was like viewing them again for the first time. Not being the EE was of no consequence for the movies either version are awesome! The audio is in 6.1 at times ther was some action in my rear center. The video looks far better than DVD and for those who are so picky, remember some of the scenes are supposed to look hazy and the effect is intentional.
Danggonnit... THIS IS MY BEST BOX SET YET!!!

Yep, I said it.

I have now actually seen FOTR, I am now allowed to have an opinion

First I'd like to say, it's been about 2 years or more since I last saw it, and wow did I forget how the storytelling was geniously done, truly an amazing movie.
Now to the PQ, I was left unimpressed, but I've seen a lot worse of course but overall left unimpressed, luckily it didn't distract too much from how great the story was, the acting, dialogue and all that jazz.
I'd say the 2.5 is a little harsh to be honest, I'd give it 2.75 or even close to 3 out of 5
But I will say that I hope that TTT and ROTK will be a considerable step up, everybody has been saying that they are luckily, so I'm looking forward to the other two

No step up for you, Scandinavian! Should've watched them all in a row, like they're meant to be seen.

Personally I love these films. When I first bought my first projector the first scene I put up was Helm's Deep.

I am very disappointed by FOTR. I am not sure if it is the transfer or the actual production but I rented all 3 and I will not buy until the studio go back and improve the first film.

As soon as I watched Two Towers it became apparent that there are major issues with the first film and given that they were released only a year apart it is quite perplexing.

Have not yet watched Return of the King but based on reviews and watching the Two Towers I assume it will rock.

If you love these films and are ok with the last two being fantastic and the first one looking slightly better than dvd quality than jump in and buy otherwise have a fantastic time renting them.

I am glad I rented and I will hold off on buying until they fix up the first film, if they never do this I can live with renting once in a while or firing up the EE dvds.

Its all personal preference but for those who are killing themselves as to whether to buy or not I say rent. People seem too keen to buy in general and I say if in doubt rent and if you love it buy it.

My setup is Optoma HD80 1080p projector, Sony BDP350, Cambridge 840A and Spendor S5es.

Screen is probably 70 inches or so

And in my opinion there is a HUGE difference between FOTR and Two Towers. Some of my colleagues at work bought it and they feel the same way.

Finally if it is true that they spent 100 hours on the transfer, and it may not be, that is a disgrace.

FOTR: Video 2 Audio 5
TT: Video 4.5 Audio 5
ROTK: watching it tomorrow.

Thanks everyone

Great observations and one of the few honest ratings that truely reflect the PQ of the first two movies.

Sorry, but how is this rating more "honest" than the rating of others here who rated the PQ higher? I'm sure most of them were just as honest (as I was) in their evaluations.....

Guess it depends there are certain scenes where I can see
an upgrade but it is not cinema quality as far as I am concerned

Just my opinion but there is no way FOTR looks anywhere
near as good as TT and until it does i won't buy the trilogy

Hopefully Jackson cleans it up on the EE

I would think that these films would be harder than most to evaluate tech considering the love that most people have for them as far as not letting that bias interfere. I have a hard time with this at times as well with movies I love. Before anyone jumps on me, this bias can work either way........it might cause one to give the PQ (in the ForR case) more credit than it deserves, and on the other hand because one loves the movie so much they might be extra hard in their grading.

One thing is for sure though and that is the reviews are interesting to read (for FotR) here and elsewhere as they are all over the map as far as the PQ.

IMO the people that have been bashing FOTR PQ are the ones that are mad about it not being the EE. I have watched and compared the movies with the screen caps and again I will say that IMO Eric.exe screen caps were bogus.

i found the shire scenes terrific no fuzzy or soft and liked how bilbo place looked

I'm not mad that they aren't the EE's, I even looked forward to watch the TE's because then I'd be able to experience the EE's for the first time again in HD at a later time. The last time I saw the entire trilogy was about 2 years or more ago, I was waiting for them to hit HD, and I can honestly say that I was unimpressed with the PQ of FOTR, gave it a 2.75 or close to 3 out of 5.

Every single person who is not happy with the PQ on FotR TE is giving this rating out of anger due to the non release of the EEs? Do you really believe this?

What about the people who are genuinely unimpressed/disappointed? Are they also mad about the EEs not coming out and wrongfully taking it out on the TEs? Do you realize how crazy this sounds?

Umm no. People are giving it a bad rating because FOTR PQ is 3/5. Bilbo Waxxins and Gandalf the DNR is one of the main reasons why.

i'm guessing this is a no - but did anyone that bought multiple steelbooks get BB to mark $5 off per steelbook? thought it might work since it's one offer.
