A movie expert on the KSL radio movie show (Utah) said that the Lord of the Rings Blu-ray movies look WORSE than regular DVD.

I'm sure that kind of misinformation must affect people's buying habits.

I am just starting to watch the last movie in the trilogy and so far they look a hell of a lot better than my DVD version.

What a lot of nonsense. I have the EE dvd's and have watched them via upscaling (yamaha 3900). The bluray might have it's flaws but is still a significant step up in PQ from the dvd. If you think otherwise really you need your eyes checked.

The funny thing that I just noticed is that the special edition discs ( 1 per movie ) are DVD and not Blu ray, any one else care to share on this?

Yeah, I noticed that too...I never watch the special features or extra's, etc. So, I can't really elaborate on that. Found that kind of weird though that they put that on DVD.

i own quite a few bd.'s with the special features on a regular dvd. It really doesn't matter unless you want Hi Def extras. IMO i doesn't matter. Put more effort into the movie. F the extras lol.

LOL,yeah I guess but we still pay for BD so I think everything should be HD, I could barely care for regular special features on a comedy movie for example but on great looking movies ie LOTR or Avatar I would like to have that option.

Well, looks to me (like I said) we have another The Fifth Element situation where the HD broadcast was just a sharpened version of what was on the Blu-ray.

Scroll to the bottom of the page:
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tut...sharp-mask.htm

Look at this and you'll see why a similar effect could explain why Gandalf appears "more detailed"...

(I dare someone to say the original, untouched photo is "DNRed to death")

I'm curious as to whether the sales will be less than expected, given the animosity shown on Amazon about the EEs not being released on BR. If the sales are much lower than expected, the price may drop.

Oh great. Thanks a lot. We could have used this link about 10,000 posts ago. Makes perfect sense to me, though.

So you're saying that this:
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/3821/lotr7tv.png
is just a sharpened image of this:
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4505/lotr7bd.png

I wish my Blockbuster had the Blu-Ray so I could really see for myself if that screen capture is accurate or not. Until then I won't know for sure.

I just finished the FOTR. First, I really enjoyed watching these movies again. I found it really hard to focus on being critical of the PQ because the movie is just so engaging. Having said that, it was still obvious to me this movie is a noticeable PQ upgrade over the EE DVDs (on my set-up). It is my suspicion that the softness we are seeing is mostly source based. I would need much more proof of process before I would even suggest that Warner (and PJ) screwed-the-pooch. Of course I won’t commit one way or the other, but that is exactly the point; anyone trying to make absolute statements about the technical processing of this transfer is kidding themselves. I am very happy with my upgrade, and I would do it again after having seen the final product with my own eyes.

Even if a marginal PQ upgrade is realistically possible, given the option of having this movie come out as-is now, or not at all until enough time and $ are available to achieve such an upgrade, then I choose to take it now and enjoy the obvious upgrade.

I'll wait for The LOTR Trilogy Blu-ray EE; meanwhile 'Avatar' is here April 22nd, on my Birthday which is Earth Day.

If we are just to view the movie for their pure entertainment value, VHS would be good enough. The whole purpose of blu-ray is to provide more picture details and a minimum of 5x the improvement on PQ over DVD.

It doesn't look quite that bad, but it's pretty much accurate.
The HD broadcast is not just a sharpened version of the Blu-ray version.
On the Blu-ray, Gandalf's beard looks like a painting.

I hope you guys are getting paid for this because probably 2% of Fans are listening lol.
The trilogy is good, and ill buy it 5 more times with all the negative, inaccurate, unprofessional advice. Go post something on a real critic website because your comments get no love nor attention. Look at the poll 62 percent still want it. Thats just bluray.com users which is probably less the 1% of worldwide bluray consumers. You are really just wasting your breath is what im trying to say.
