Just picked one up on Amazon Mkt Place for $20!! Seller was gohastings and they describe it in very good condition. Crossing my fingers this goes through and the set is in very good/like new condition. Hopefully the digital copies will be unused as well.

I know gohastings is pretty good on their return policy. I returned one blu ray out of about 10 I've ordered directly from their website before.

Dammit, now I'm going to have to dig up a link to a video of that trailer, if it can be found.
The screenwriters became famous throughout the trilogy for taking dialogue/lines from one character or scene and giving them to another.

Theoden's actual speech from the battle is:

Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

I haven't been able to spot "World ending day" anywhere, though. Seems the closest thing comes from Eomer's speech in the book, which is given to Theoden in the movie - "Ride to ruin and the world's ending!"

So Strider you agree with me, that Theoden King is the best speech maker in the movies? Aragorn doesn't even come close sadly, although a guy I spoke to about it thinks that has to do with the fact that Theoden has a lot more experience firing up troops for battle.

Yeah, I know.
...and I can't find that trailer anywhere, (I thought I still had it on my hard drive). I'll just have to count myself as "proven wrong" and edit the post.

I'm actually quite partial to Aragorn's speech at the Black Gates. I mean - here's a guy who's been reluctant to claim his destiny his entire life, and he's rallying the men of two kingdoms to fight to the bitter end. He doesn't seem entirely at ease with that prospect at all. I kind of like that.

But, yeah, Theoden's speech in RotK is the stuff of cinematic legend. I don't think I took a single breath from the moment his mouth opened until the scene ended!

I've finished all three now. They're extraordinary films.

The audio on all three films are 5/5. Reference quality audio.

As for video...

FOTR is 3.5-4.0/5. It looks a LOT better than some posters are saying and its black/white with the DVD quality(judging from the special features as I don't own the DVD editions) My eyes aren't that sensitive to DNR. There were a few moments that looked bad, but if you spotted anything terrible... you're probably just looking for flaws so you can talk about them on some forum instead actually enjoying a film.
TTT and ROTK looked 5/5 to me. Apparently they also have problems, but I feel that if there wasn't so much said about the PQ on these discs I'd never look for flaws in the picture. Of course, there are problems, but they rarely got in the way or were noticed by me. So don't take this as 100% perfect, but the majority of the 6+ hours you will be staring at reference quality picture. They aren't perfect, but IMO are above 4.5 for both.

I'm not a qualified reviewer or anything, and I'm not as crazy as those people who go to AVS. I thought that in retrospect, these films look great and if I was Peter Jackson I'd have been pleased with these(which apparently he was).

I also really want to see the Extended Editions now. I'm hungry for more LOTRy goodness.

The battles are cool. And Aragorn and Theoden's speeches are incredble, but I always wondered why they went through all that trouble when this would have been so much simpler.

You'd think Elrond would at least spring for some better transportation than going on foot with a couple of pack-animals.

I guess elves are cheapskates...

... but then, I probably would be, too, if I were a 4500-year-old retired soldier living on a fixed income and home-equity, with no expectation of death-by-age, who lives with a 2700-year-old spoiled brat who still won't move out of the house, and an entourage that I can't seem to get rid of. I bet Elrond subtly leaves all kinds of enticing travel brochures for the Grey Havens laying around, hoping his "guests" will pick one up and say "whoah... a sea voyage and paradise! Rock on! Let's go 'borrow' some money from Elrond, and take that cruise!" The fact that they never come back is most likely the result of some cold-blooded arrangement that Elrond has with Cirdan, to get rid of the freeloaders for good.

Now you know the real reason why the elves are all heading west across the sea.

That's pretty funny. I remember reading in some reference, perhaps the LoTR Reader's Companion by Hammond and Scull (?), that the adventure could have been shortened 1000 pages by having the eagles drop the ring in Mt. Doom. Also, there are other paths the Fellowship could have taken to shorten the journey and minimize the danger. But thankfully for everyone - especially Tolkien, Peter Jackson, and New Line Cinema - they did it the hard way.

As far as the speeches go, I think that Jackson and the screenwriters did a great job with Theoden and the ride of the Rohirrim - it is one of my favorite parts of the films. The Aragorn speech is another matter, not only relatively lackluster compared to Theoden's, but also mostly anti-climatic. It also has no equivalent in the book, where after dismissing the Mouth of Sauron, Aragorn simply sets the order of battle and awaits the onslaught; there is no charge:

'Little time was left to Aragorn for the ordering of the battle. Upon one hill he stood with Gandalf, and there fair and desperate was raised the banner of the Tree and Stars. Upon another hill hard by stood the banners of Rohan and Dol Amroth, White Horse and Silver Swan. And about each hill a ring was made facing all ways bristling with spear and sword... And out of the gathering mirk the Nazgul came with their cold voices crying words of death; and then all hope was quenched.'

When I was a youngster, I had a really great encyclopedic resource on all of these details:

It was called 'The Tolkien Companion', written by J.E.A. Tyler.
According to Amazon.com, that book was revised and updated in 2004, so it may be even better now. It's 730 pages, it's in-stock, and it's only $3...

... I think I may have to put in an order to replace my lost copy, right now.
Thanks for the info. Will check that out

Default Awesome....just awesome!

I watched the entire trilogy on Blu-Ray and fell in love with all three movies all over again.

People often ask me what I find so fascinating about these movies, and I always tell them the same thing--you can't describe the experience--you have to experience it for yourself! I tell them that they can't just watch the movies, they have to become a part of them. If you don't allow your imagination to take part in the events, you will NEVER understand "what all the fuss is about"...

I watched "The Lord of the Rings" on Thursday evening, "The Two Towers" on Friday evening, and "Return of the King" on Saturday evening. I laughed, I cried, I felt every single emotion a human being could experience through these three movies.

At the end, once the final credits came up, My entire view of the world changed. That's the type of effect good movies have on me.

Now, I look forward to the Extended Versions so that I may experience this once again.

And most importantly--eagerly awaiting "The Hobbit"........

What makes you think the price is going up? Titles usually go down in price, with age. Especially if it doesn't sell as well as they hope.

You've got that right! The characters/events and dialogue are all mixed up throughout the movies. Although there are dozens of examples, two that immediately come to mind (because I am currently on that chapter in the forum group) come from Moria. The words that Arwen speaks to Frodo after he is wounded at Weathertop, "lasto beth lammen" (Elvish for "listen to the word of my tongue") are spoken in the book by Gandalf when is trying to open the doors of Moria. In the movie, one of Sam's quotes in Moria occurred in the book after Gandalf blasted a pack of wolves. Sam: "That was an eye-opener and no mistake! Nearly singed the hair off of my head!"

I learned from watching 'Fellowship' what volume setting adjustment was required to keep objects from rattling off of tables. A good maximum volume reference check in TTT is when
[Show spoiler] the explosion that shatters the wall of Helm's Deep
occurs.
