You remember with the FOTR TE DVD they had a problem with the entire production. The box indicated it was Dolby Digital EX like the TTT and ROK DVDs, but they were just Dolby Digital 5.1.
No, on PS3 set to LPCM it shows 7.1 input on the processor.

Here is a direct quote from my Yamaha RX-V565BL's manual, "In straight decoding mode, sounds are reproduced without sound field effect. 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers. Mutli-channel input sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels and multi-channel sounds are reproduced without a sound field effect." I usually have my blu-ray player set to PCM, but I don't think that matters cause it outputs the same on bitstream too. The other settings I have are soundfields, which minipulate the quality. All I'm saying is this is what my reciever does when it outputs it's true quality. Yes I do have the option from other sourround decoders, like Pro Logic, but those again minpulate the sound. I don't think there is anythign wrong with my reciever. It's just the way it is.

Underworld54,it depends on your Blu-ray player but to display the bitrate you use your remotes "display" button.

You may have to refer to your manual.

On the Ps3 just bring up the osd and select the display icon.

As far as i am aware the Ps3 slim will not have a dual setting for the Hdmi,it will just have bitstream which will output the full 3/6 Mbps codec, and stand alone Blu-ray players will do the same.

Well, Elrond isn't Galadriel's son, he's her daughter's husband.

If your receiver is duplicating the output of the L+R surround channels of 5.1 DTS-MA material to the back channels without an additional processing mode then something is wrong. The codec itself is not designed to do that.

I'll have to check on that, but I don't think it's much of a problem, ya I get duplicate sound, but I don't think it takes away any of the audio clarity. I mean, I set a microphone up to balance all of my speakers so there isn't any interference. Sure the studios didn't want me to hear it like that, but as long as it's producing the sound out of the 5 main speakers the way it was meant to be, I'm fine with it.

He is disappointed about the extras not the transfers. And i actually think those idiots at amazon giving it 1 star because it not the EE is very very childish

Ok, I looked at the speaker layout diagram, and it tells me that in a 5.1 channel layout, meaning if the source is 5.1, the surround back left and right channel sound signals are output from the surround left and right speakers. So, in other words, my reciever is doing what it was designed to do. It also says that in a 6.1 layout, the surround back left and right channel sound signals are mixed down and output from the single surround back speaker. Meaning they both output the same sound like a single 6.1 speaker would. I'll give you the link to the pdf if you want me to, but I know the reciever is not bad. It's just the way it is.

I agree with you on that. If you throw out a '1 star'..make sure its because the actual disc suck.....not because its not some directors cut...EE...whatever.

I wished he would have spoken up on the transfer, but I am sure that will not ever happen.

My PS3 is a launch 60GB with PS2 backwards compatibility and SACD playback (plus the multi-card reader). Of course, at launch it only recognized the core lossy DTS codec and not the HD-HR or HD-MA extensions.

I also manually set the HDMI output, checking everything for audio (including AAC), and of course it's set for PCM output.

So I put in, say, Wall*E, DISPLAY shows "DTS-HD MA 6.1 48kHz".
Display on my Onkyo shows "MCH PCM 7.1, fs 48kHz" (note that all 6.1 output is split between the back L & R channels).
Now it sounds like an issue with the PS3 slim. I get exactly the same result as you (PeterTHX) do with my PS3 Fat. I leave my HDMI output set to automatic. (with my setup all the codecs are checked in automatic). The difference between The Last Stand and LOTR and the other 6.1 movies that have been empirically checked so far, is that only The Last Stand had the old ES format. There were a few releases with the DTS ES Master Audio codec. Do you know what they were? If he could get one those in his PS3 slim, I'll bet it would work as well. Is there anyone else out there with a PS3 slim that is experiencing a similar issue? It might be helpful if you weigh in on this.

"Sophisticated algorithms are used to electronically “reposition” speakers, so you get the best possible sound quality without having to physically re-arrange your speakers. All DTS-HD featured A/V receivers have the ability to re-map content mixed with up to seven different speaker layouts"

Just another reason why, if you have the equipment to do it, you should use the DTS-HD MA decoder.

The way I read this, with a LOTR in and your slim set to lpcm your avr display is 7.1 and you are getting sound to all 7.1 speakers. Is your PS3 display (hit select on the controller) showing DTS-HD MA 6.1 with a variable bit rate? If so, everthing is working as it should. The DTS-HD MA decoder in your PS3, uses the speaker remapping function, and causes your AVR to use all 7 speakers but replicates the studio master by "electronically repositioning" your speakers.

Yeah. But i heard him say that he has seen them and said they looked fantastic. And that was actually the words he used.
And having seen them myself on a 50" screen. I really do think this is the best they ever looked. (even FOTR)I am VERY happy with this box set

Then he obviously didn't listen to the question, which was about the Extended Versions, not the bonus features.

And can we please move all this DTS audio discussion to another thread?

I am quite happy with the boxset. Sure, I would rather have the EE's. But for now, this will do and when the EE's come out...I will trade up. Nothing like a good ring-a-thon for a good day.

Yes, but the person I quoted said Elrond was her child. I didn't think that was referring to son-in-law.
