After ordering "Les Carabiniers" and "La Petit Soldat" earlier this week from Amazon I visited my local Hastings store and walked away with "2 or 3 Things I Know About Her". Figuring it was time to take a break from Godard for a bit, I also bought "Vampyr" and came home and ordered "The Passion of Joan of Arc" and "Band of Outsiders" from Amazon. And I expect May to be a busy month. My pocketbook isn't speaking to me right now, but at least I've got some great movies to keep me company.

Nice, I haven't bought anything since Vivre sa vie (well besides Battleship Potemkin) because I am saving up to get ready for May, with Oshima's Eclipse, the Brakhage set, and Stagecoach coming. Got M and The Fugitive Kind pre-ordered for when the Oshima ships so I can just spend the money at the same time.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm feeling the pain for next month. Already pre-ordered M, Stagecoach, Walkabout, Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long, and Tru Blood season 2. As you can tell, I enjoy just about anything - just depends on my mood.

I actually hope so. I got pre-orders on Criterion's site from the March discount, but if there is a 50% sale, I going there.

I also have the May and June releases on preorder from the Criterion 25% off sale, but will likewise cancel them if and when another B&N sale happens.

Just received Rossellini War Trilogy, Letters from Fontainhas by Pedro Costa, Mizoguchi's Fallen Women and Rossellini's History Films today from Criterion.

Hope ya like them. The War Trilogy has to be one of the top 3 releases of the year for Criterion when the year comes to an end.

I've seen Rome Open City on a crappy transfer and it's brilliant. Thinking of starting with the Mizoguchis. Hoping for future bluray releases of Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff and maybe 47 Ronin?

Ride with the Devil.

Please explain how Criterion warrant their typical high price on a so so film with so so extras?

Because the standard DVD of "Ride With The Devil" is considered an upper-tier title, which sells for $31.96 on Criterion's site. I'm pretty sure all of Criterion's "upper-tier" and 2-disc releases have an MSRP of $39.95. All of Criterion's single-disc blu-rays are priced at the equivalent of the 2-disc standard DVD release, which has been Criterion's promise the whole time... to sell their blu-rays at the same price of their 2-disc DVD releases.

Usually, and this is not always the case, but if the film usually contains two discs or either a commentary track it usually bumps it up to 39.99, I felt Gomorrah was lacking.

Only watched first hour of Ride with the Devil, ICE STORM is better. It is still nice to have a decent release of the film.

Also Criterion and Lee I think worked together on this release because it is a new Director's Cut.

The DVD is actually only one disc. The fact it has two commentaries is probably the reason (as mentioned previously the price is usually higher if there is a commentary track OR the release is two discs, with the odd exception here and there.)

Speaking of Spartacus, it would seem the upcoming BD release likely means no Criterion BD anytime soon, yes?

I agree with you about Spartacus needing a new transfer. The HD DVD was terrible.

I currently have Gomorrah in my player, but will probably watch 8 1/2 this evening.
