Well then I would suspect you to be more impressed when this title makes its way to Blu-ray.

Shortly after that last DVD was produced, and after the 40th anniversary of this film’s theatrical debut, the powers that be decided to do a complete restoration with 4K scanning of this remarkable movie.

It took four employees (from a highly respected restoration company) working on it for 6 months ----just to clean it.

The digital premiere of the final product was shown at the Landmark Theater in West L.A. over the summer. I believe it was the first complete digital 4K Black & White restoration shown to the public on a Sony SRX-R110 (4K projector).

I do not think anyone in the audience noted a single stratch or dirt particle on any of the imagery during the 4K presentations.

Let me elaborate on what Chris said, since I'm one of the participants in the original discussion he's referring to. The issue is that while DVD has a max bitrate of 9.8Mbps for video, some of the early decks couldn't maintain a sustained (not just peak) 9.8Mbps rate, either because of inconsistent drive speed and/or bad buffering algorithms, leading to buffer underruns. This lead to studios and authoring houses applying artificial bitrate limitations that are stricter than the specification, and even though those decks have been out of the retail chain for many years those limitations are still followed - at least by some.

My followup on Chris's question is then, what is the current state of BD players relative to the specification - can they all maintain a sustained rate of 40Mbps for video? Likewise can they handle a sustained rate of 24.5Mbps for audio, which I believe is the current limitation (full DTS-HD-MA)? If they (or some future players) can't, will we be seeing titles deliberately crippled for all time to compensate for CE vendors being unable to create hardware that satisfies the specifications?

Some of the posts in this thread are a bit confused - let me see if I can clear those up: Blu-ray reserves 48Mbps for audio and video, of which video can have a max rate of 40Mbps, and audio has 8Mbps minimum reserved for use. If the audio needs more than 8Mbps, it'll then impact the maximum possible video bitrate. So the title PeterTHX refers to will have a maximum possible video bitrate of 48-13.8 = 34.2Mbps. All this is ignoring runtime and disc space - if the runtime is long enough that you can't fit the contents using maximum bitrate, the bitrate ceilings will similarly be affected.

Do the specs comment on how long a constant 40Mbps rate is required to be sustained? Do the machines consume more energy and produce more heat at higher bitrates? If so, I'm wondering if it is specified or whether the highest rates are assumed to be transient.

Speaking of which, do any insiders know what FOX is thinking now that there are reports that BD+ may be cracked?

Paidgeek said that they can generate a new key on a title by title basis, so they would have to crack every title.

No hidden meaning here folks.
Dogdvr read it right from the git-go.

The pic is simply a postpartum update on my girl.

Hey P-man, do the rumors of a possible upcoming XBOX 360 with a built in HDDVD player concern you at all?

I understand that, but that does not answer my question.

How does Fox FEEL about the rumors that BD+ may have been cracked? Are they Discouraged? Or is this something they anticipated would happen in his time frame?

As far as I know this rumor has been debunked.
http://kotaku.com/gaming/hd-era/tosh...360-314221.php

In a way, it would be great if they were stupid enough to do it for the following reasons:

1) not possible to release games on HD DVD anyway, otherwise you ostracize the instaleld playerbase (pretty big one)

2) Increases the price of the Xbox360 and limits your choice (with or without, with add on), which is kinda the only "edge" that the 360 has on the PS3 (price wise).

3) would have close to 0 benefits as opposed to the add on, thus confusing buyers.

I only wish they'd try that

Petra, Penton-Man has a couple of healthy looking coyotes as regular visitors near his house (I think he feeds them - so they like him). One of his "girls" may have had some pups.

On a personal note, I think Coyotes have adapted really well to humans in the environment. They've even started to be seen occasionally by folks in my part of Maryland.

I’ll give a brief synopsis but, I don’t want to derail this thread to too much. Sometimes I think it’s just nice for a diversion from all this stuff that we read about day in and day out.

I don’t want to give locations because of personal privacy but, when I venture into the “wilderness” or *what’s left of it* ……. I always take the time to appreciate all aspects of nature.

One day while I was outs and about, I found “Maya” on a ridge at about the 3,000 -3,500 ft. level. She was but a wee young thing (several weeks old) and had gotten herself tangled up in what was the remnants of an old high mountain pasture. Specifically, she got hopelessly entangled in a ball of barbed wire and surely would have died from either starvation or septic shock from her deep lacerations.

After seeing her plight, I went home and got some gloves, barbed wire cutters and a tube of Neosporin and trekked on back up de mountain. She was obviously still there but, no longer struggling because of exhaustion. Her sister was but 10 ft. away patiently sitting by her and protecting her from other roaming critters.

I’m kinda good with dem animals so, long story short, I cut her out of the wire entanglement and copiously applied Neosporin all over her wounds while her sis was watching. Both of them never forgot my intervention and somehow installed my scent in their memories…..permanently.

Flash forward several years…………..
I kinda watch over them during tough times, i.e. fire, the current drought in SoCal. Maya had two pups earlier this year and her sister had one. At least that’s what survived of each original litter, I assume. So now they are a family of five.

Every so often, I enjoy giving people an update pic.
The pic I just posted was one I shot from last weekend.

They would have only crasked one title. They'd have to crack anothe ttitle, then another ttile, then another title. Cracking one does not make it easier to crack others.

Here's what Paid said the first time this was asked...

Quote:
Q: Anyone have any comments about Slysoft's claims of cracking BD+?

A: We expect that BD+ will be cracked on a given title if smart hackers decide to focus on it. The benefit of BD+ is that we can change the scrambling method on a title by title basis, so they have to work on each title to break it. If this is not generating profit for the hackers, what is the motivation to keep doing it?
