The Simpsons: The Thirteenth Season Blu-ray

The Simpsons: The Thirteenth Season Blu-ray Review

I don't know why they're releasing a BD of this season, it's not HD!

It wasn't broadcast in HD at the time, but but the bump to HD (and it better be in the native 1.33:1 format and not 1.78:1) is still beneficial if the masters are of sufficient quality.

And they're releasing season 13 because that's where they left off prior to the cash-grab that was the Season 20 release, which should mean we'll get the usual plethora of extras.

Technical specifications according to IMDb:

Film negative format (mm/video inches)
Film

Printed film format
Video (HDTV) (season 20-)
Video (NTSC) (seasons 1-19)

Aspect ratio
1.33 : 1 (seasons 1-19)
1.78 : 1 (season 20-)

So I guess if they go back to the 'film negative format' they COULD make it HD? Who knows whether they've done that though, I'll bet there is no noticeable difference between this and the DVD version. The review here for season 20 said the non-HD eps "look strikingly similar to the set's standard DVD counterpart."

This will be one of those sets that comes down to the review for me. I don't want to waste my money on something that looks minimally better than the DVD counterpart, esp. since I have the previous 12 seasons on DVD. I only have the 20th season on blu because of the HD episodes.

Glad they're releasing more Simpsons though. Could always use more.

I was planning on not buying past season 11...but if 13 is on blu-ray AND has commentaries on all the episodes like 20 should have, then I'll grab it.

According to tvshowsondvd.com all 22 episodes will be 1.33:1 with 5.1 DTS-HD audio and commentaries.

Audio commentaries on all 22 episodes is pretty awesome. DTS HD-MA is good too, but still not sure on the PQ upgrade.

Yeah, I'm going to hold out for a review on this one for sure. The HD-audio could be nice but if the picture is the same as the dvd counterpart I may just stick with that. I currently have 1-12 on dvd so for uniformity the dvd would look better on the shelf.

Assuming Fox uses a standard BD case, I think that would be a motivator for me to get it! I can't stand the fold-out cardboard cases the DVDs have been using since season 11 - sliding the discs in and out of the tight cardboard sleeves is not a pleasant experience.

I wish they would release the BLUs for SIMPSON's in the same style case as all the previous DVD seasons. They could have a slight border on the top part of the case to let customers know which is DVD and which is blu.

That season 20 Blu release case was really bad. Very cheap. Esp for the price.

It is a nice change to know Season 13 is back on track with extras, at least audio commentaries are noted.

I know, they're absolutely horrible...you can barely tell a disc is even in there. Just looked like a little foldout brochure on card-stock or something until you look between the layers.

For continuity's sake alone, I'll stick with the DVD.
