Plot Holes in Movies (Spoilers)

After viewing the "Hatred for PT SW" thread then looking closely at all other movies , and most recently Bourne Ultimatum. I have come to the conclusion that plot holes increase value of movies.

I do suspend belief when I watch a movie and I do think they are very fun. But usually on the second viewing stuff catches my eye.


Let me reiterate that this thread is to point out that even tough many of us can and will point out plot holes, these holes might be the reason why we like these these movies to begin with.

So let's have some fun when we poke some holes in these plots.

Of course plot holes/climax of the story contribute to how good the movie is. I also believe other elements involved to influence the public about the film.

You have:

• Casts.
• Writers.
• Directors.
• and even more choices to have an inluence as well.

That is my point!!

Me included, need to STOP picking movies apart. It is getting old.

By now it should be a given that most everything here is an opinion and there is no such thing as "Good taste" and "Bad taste" Just popular opinion and unpopular opinion.

But then again, these opposing opinions is what drives this site.

I agree with ALL of your statements and these holes are not the sole reason for sales. But a flick that is totally believable does not SEEM to have much staying power (SPR exception and others like)

But it's rare to find a movie that follows it's own internal logic.

There is actualy more reality in movies then in the news these days I think Avatar is more real then what is being reported on CNN

If you substituted CNN with FOX news,I would agree

Interesting thought blu2u.Always wondered why so many movies incorporate things wich is so obviously baffling.Like in terminator salvation when the terminator has it's human target in it's hands,then chooses to throw him away rather than taking him out there and then...Would make a rather shortened franchise I guess,but why incorporate it grabbing him in the first place? Tons of other examples out there which probably are worse,but it came out at the top of my mind.

very simple answer, because they are movies In real life the bad guy won't spend 15 minutes on a speech and let the chance to the good guy to find a way to escape and defeat the bad guy. That's because it's real life. In movies we want to good guy to win but not too easy, he as to struggle a bit first. I say again, they are movies. If you want reality, walk around outside with your eyes open

Yep...I sent out a challenge to pick apart the Star Wars films (ot before any changes) and see what you can come up with. I had no takers at all....

I like movies that don't feel the need to explain everything to the audience. I've heard many times about movies having added scenes or dumbed down scripts because the studio's/exec's feel the public is too stupid to follow a intricate plot. There have been a few films that in the past decade or so have challenged this norm thank goodness. I find these types of films leave more up for discussion as well as conjecture then just plot holes.

Personally I find plot holes a side effect of lousy scriptwriting. Many times it happens because a director wants to fit a certain action or special effects scene into a film. More emphasis is placed on getting these scene's in and less is placed on continuity

I googled Star Wars Plot Holes and this was the very first link I clicked. I'm sure I could go down the list, but anyone can do it for themselves.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

We had to make this number one, not because of the size of the plot hole, but because it's friggin' Star Wars. That's right nerds, the indisputably best one of the series has a pretty gaping hole of its own.



The Plot:
You know the plot. Don't play that game.


The Hole:
So there's the famous sequence where Luke gets trained by Yoda on Yoda's sh**hole of a planet. To break up the sequence, the film cuts to the Millennium Falcon getting chased by the Empire to Lando's cloud city. When they arrive, they get captured, at which point Luke has finished his training.


Well, that doesn't work. Were they chased for months? Or was Luke trained in an afternoon? Either we were spared some extended scenes on board the Millennium Falcon featuring starvation and debates about when they'd have to eat Chewbacca, or becoming a Jedi is easier than getting a cub scout merit badge.

The latter explanation seems more plausible, as it just reveals Luke to be an even whinier ***** than he seemed. Talk about ungrateful, he's getting taught God-like abilities in about six hours, and he complains through literally every single one of them. It also means Yoda's insistence that Jedis start their training as young children isn't because the training's such a long arduous process, but because he's amused by the idea of children knowing how to choke each other with their minds.

Now it's true that when Luke tries to leave, Yoda insists the training isn't over. But when Luke returns to Planet Sh**hole in Return of the Jedi to finish it, Yoda waves him off and tells him there's nothing else to learn.
Then it turns out the final test Luke has to pass to become a Jedi is to defeat Darth Vader, the most powerful Jedi in the universe which kind of seems like a huge leap in difficulty after his one-day training session. That'd be like if the final stage of your driving test was to win the Indy 500.
So to answer the question, at what point did George Lucas stop paying attention? It looks like it was part way through the second movie.

Just because Lord Stewie Deux considers Glitter the best movie ever does not make him any less of a person than the rest of us.

No. Not interested. I've seen the OT over 500 times collectively when I was younger (probably haven't watched them for over 10 years now). Watched the prequels probably twice each. I'm good. No need for me to revisit.

I still think there's no movie that's perfectly flawless. Every movie requires some form of looking over their flaws. Granted some have far fewer than others (like you pointed out).
