Agreed. I was at a friend's house this weekend who had every disc of "The Office: Season Four" face down/artwork up on her coffee table. And in her little cabinet with the rest of her DVDs were just random discs thrown about. Now I'm not saying everyone has to be as obsessed as us collectors are but why would you treat anything like that? You spend the money on these titles and then immediately go home and destroy them? Some people are just complete morons (yes, my fiend included).

If you loan a BD to a friend and he/she returns it NOT in the same condition as it was borrowed there is a problem. You'll be pissed and they will say it was not their fault. Avoid the potential problem and Avoid loaning! (imo)

Nah... I am known among my circle as a very anal person when it comes to my collection and gear. They know better...otherwise they love me just the same or at least I think they do [grin].

Same with me, they know not to even ask. (unless they want to borrow a dvd...typically I'll give them my dvd free if I have it on blu or intend to upgrade).

I mean, they're welcome just about any time to come over and watch one, if they want. That I don't mind.

I was used to be very anal about my DVDs - I'd often lend them to people either in a bag or in a spare case - but since I started collecting Blu-rays, my DVD collection has lost much of its novelty and I tend to lend them to people with little bother. Still, there are some DVDs in my collection, in particular special editions with slipcovers and such, that I regret lending to people. My Taxi Driver 2-disc and Last House on the Left 3-disc sets look rather battered, and my Garden State and The Shining DVDs came back scratched and unwatchable.

I won't be lending my Blu-rays out, though. Having said that, if somebody asked, my reflex response would mostly likely be, "Sure you can borrow it!" Then I'd feel like an idiot.

Seeing how this thread is 26 pages long forgive if I'm stating something that has already been said!

On the subject of loaning out movies you are pretty much stuck in the Catch 22 of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" - If you want to protect your movies and refuse to loan them out you risk alienating your friends, however if you do loan them out and when said friend returns it in less than perfect condition and you complain about how they treated your property you once again risk alienating your friends.

If one of my friends damaged or lost one of my disks they would replace it as I would do for them. I guess that just illustrates the quality of my friends.

I never used to lend BDs out until I brought my mother a Blu ray player. Now it seems like I'm her personal Blockbuster.

I used to loan them out but I've been burned too many times. Coffee stains, fingerprints, scratches, broken cases and even outright theft persuaded me otherwise. Besides, if the person really wants to see the movie, they can rent or buy it themselves, especially in the age of Netflix. I have a lot of titles on DVD and Blu and it always annoys me when people just assume that they can borrow them, especially when they have the nerve to mock me for buying so many. Seriously, my girlfriend's obnoxious sister and even more obnoxious brother-in-law came to visit once and were casing my collection. The first thing the sister said was, "Wow, this is why we don't buy that many movies. They just clutter up your house." Then within 10 seconds after that she said, "Ooh, we'll have to borrow this one." What a hypocrite! Needless to say, no movies left my house.

so as the story goes, i sold my old BD player to a buddy of mine and his girlfriend, (both of whom i've known for over 10 years) for cheap since i have my PS3.

well, after having it for a week, they start buying blus on a vicious basis - much like myself - and then when they come over, they look at my collection and say, "oh, i haven't seen this movie. can we borrow it?"

i NEVER lend out my blus. to ANYONE. for any REASON.
and when i explain that these are my children and that they do not leave my home once entered, they through a fit. screaming about how "we're best friends and it's only a movie!" and blah blah blah. either way, long story short. never sell an old BD player to your friends.
Oh, that's a great story...believe me, as a collector myself I can completely understand and sympathize with your perspective. And in all honesty, if they're truly your friends, they should understand and respect your stance on not borrowing out your movies. At the same time though, if you know your friends would take good care of it, why not borrow it to them? I hope this doesn't come off as though I'm preaching to you, but to me, the relationships I have with others in life are far more important than any 'physical' item I own. In fact, I'd rather 'give up' my Blu-ray collection, than lose the companionship of my friends and loved ones...But then again, every person is different, and entitled to their own choices...That said, I do hope you're able to reconcile with your friends at some point...thanks again for that story though, it was a great laugh!

Sadly, this is true...and that's the type of person I'd never lend to either. On the other hand, I have a couple of friends who are meticulous like me when it comes to handling stuff, and I've gladly lent them my DVD's before, and have always got them back in in perfect condition...So, I really don't have a problem borrowing discs out, but I am however, particular as to who...

I just don't understand this. Even if somebody does have something that I want, I never ask to borrow it because I consider that to be rude. If I want something, I buy it for myself. It seems like the only people that have the nerve to ask are cheapskates and freeloaders who think they are entitled to other peoples' possessions just because they are acquainted.

None of my family/friends even own a blu ray player yet, so never. But if someone eventually did buy a player I'd let them borrow a movie if I knew that they were trustworthy and kept good care of their things.

I loaned out "The Office" Season 1 to my friend and his stupid roommate appropriated it and managed to spill a cup of coffee all over the case (so the paper insert was completely stained). He said he'd replace it but it really wasn't his fault so I told him he didn't have to. I didn't know the roommate well enough to ask her. So sometimes you still get screwed even if you have good friends!

In that case, your friend should've reimbursed you out of respect, and then taken it up with the roommate later. If someone borrowed something to me, and someone in my household got a hold of it because I was careless, then it would be my fault, and I'd reimburse my friend. While that item is in my possession, it is my responsibility.

You're right of course, but my friend was broke at the time and I didn't want him to resent me for making him pay for it. I guess I was in a charitable mood that day.
