Just out of curiosity:
Does anyone have any news links or theories as to why the gauranteed hot sellers have not come out on BD from the studios who are supporting BD? I'm talking about The Matrix, LOTR, etc. This seems odd for studios like Warner who are releasing movies on both formats, and doubly odd for studios like Fox who are supporting only BD. Why would Warner not want to sell thousands and thousands of HD versions of The Matrix for $35? Why would Fox not want to sell thousands and thousands of HD versions of Star Wars on BD, especially given that such "Killer App" titles might help bring about the conclusion of the format war? Thoughts? |

My guess is that they don't want to rush these out without any new extras.
But that's a good question. Remember, Lucas held out against the DVD format for years before re-releasing Star Wars on that format. However, I would love to see LOTR, Jurassic Park, and even Harry Potter on Bluray... |

Am I the only one who doesn't care about extras?
I can see Lucas holding out because he's odd like that, but new transfers of LOTR or The Matrix would be HUGE. This would be a great question to get an industry insider's opinion on. |

What really bugs me... I don't care about replacing my DVD collection, but I sure as hell don't want to buy NEW discs on DVD! I want to buy on Blu-ray and when Cars, Pirates of the Carribean, and other blockbuster titles don't make it to Blu-ray but ARE coming out on DVD then I have a real quandary.
Old titles should be brought out sooner rather than later, but priority MUST be given to release Blu-ray day and date with their DVD counterparts to that people who own the format can really get the titles that they want! |

Nope. Most just want the best picture and sound.
The reason studios are holding back, is because they want the install base to increase before releasing their top titles. Unfortunately, the only way the install base is going to increase is if these studios release their top titles. Double-edge sword. Fox has done a respectable job. If you look at all the titles they have out and plan to have out, there are some real great releases there. Kingdom of Heaven, X-men 3, Usual Suspects, etc. They are even giving us Princes Bride which is completely insane! (I love that movie). Sony has tried, but got scared off with the whole Fifth Element fiasco. That should have been a cornerstone release, and when it failed to meet those expectations, they pulled back hard on their releases (you've probably noticed that). Black Hawk Down is one of those releases that will sell players, but it is the sole Sony release I can think of which can do it. Warner and Paramount have thrown in a bunch, but besides the Mission Impossible set, nothing too huge. World Trade Center will be pretty significant, I think. But since theses titles are on both formats, who knows what the impact will be. Disney needs to get off their ass, especially with Lionsgate making a huge push in the first quarter with The Descent, American Psycho, etc. Disney needs to put at least one uber-title out so that people can drool on that until they get around to releasing there other stuff. Cars in the first quarter would be huge. |

Yes we need to see one big Pixar movie like Cars, Monsters Inc., Toy Story or A Bug's Life show up.
Cars would be the best choice as it's still new. For Sony if they put out Spiderman 1 and 2 in the first half of 2007 it will be a nice boost for Blu-ray. Fox need to get out Titanic, ID4, Die Hard trilogy, Alien 1-3, Fight Club, Predator 1-2, Daredevil, X Men 1&2, Minority Report, Robots and Cast Away. I'd get all those the day they were released in lovely DTS-MA. Last edited by dobyblue; 12-07-2006 at 07:04 PM. |

Ah... the Install Base. These film studios can kiss my @$$. If they are waiting around for 2 million PS3s to be sold before they release the great movies mentioned above, its going to be a looooonnng wait...
The Nintendo Wii has already sold more than a million units in only 2 weeks. And I doubt many people are buying the HD DVD add-on for the xbox 360. This message is clear: The average consumer NEEDS a lot of motivation to fork over $500 to $1000 to watch HD movies. Gamers are flocking to the Wii, which is cheap, and has a larger variety of games out than the PS3 so far. |

I dont think we'll have to wait to long for 2 million consoles sold for the ps3. They just need to up the supply (the demand is there). I believe the message thats happening with the wii is, people are really into the gimmick of the controller. I know people who want one just to have it (im almost one of them). The real challenge for the wii, is to hold those consumers to buy more then a couple of games befor ethey becaome bored with the controller. I think in a way the wii is helping out the ps3. Alot of people who would have flocked to the 360 due to ps3 shortages are buying a wii since its cheap and the concept is cool. (a wii star wars light saber game would be cool). |

Yeah, even if Sony is short of their '6 million PS3s sold by March' forecast, that should still create a substantial base for Bluray movie consumers in the next couple of months.
MS better drop the price on their Add-on HD DVD player soon if they plan on competing with Bluray; what a crappy design-solution... |

I'm pissed. "V for Vendetta" and "Batman Begins" (HD-DVD) versions were on sale at Wal-Mart near where I live for 19.99. Both of which I was waiting for on Blu-Ray and put off on buying the regular DVDs.
Anyway, this "We'll put it on Blu-Ray at some far off, uncertain date" crap is becoming old really fast... ![]() |

Right now there a people compaining about Xmen-3 for goodness sake. And no doubt, if they had held it back pending production of extras, people would be asking "Where is X-men 3?!" Do people want day and date, if it means a basic release? Gary |

On the R3 version of X3 on DVD, it is clear the DVD production shot a lot of on set materials. They also shot interviews on HD. The 2-disc set is clearly loaded.
The real reasons I think of the lack of extras is a) there are no HD extras so Sony, Disney and Fox are shying away from SD extras; and b) at the time of authoring, BD50 lines were still not stable or online. But back to the real topic, immediately after CES or in February, Sony would announce BD availability of Spider-man movies. fuad |
