How so? EE and DNR like all post effects take a hit on performance and in this case, bitrate.

DNR does exactly the opposite. Grain is difficult to compress since it's high frequency and there's no correlation between frames, thus it takes a lot of data to describe. Removing grain makes the image more compressible.

The new Gangs looks better because it's a better transfer. I don't think its compressed all that well actually.

And your point is exactly why I feel its POSSIBLE that the new Predator BD can look better. Its one of the grainiest films around...its hard for me to believe that with a new encode on a larger disc some of the grain won't be resolved better...

I wouldn't be surprised if some purists think the original release looks better than this new one. Its bound to have a lot of digital processing applied, so although to some it might look cleaned up, to others it will be botched up.

The film is too grainy. Adding DNR to attempt a "clean up" would make the Pan's Lab DNR threads look like a walk in the park with baby.

Looks like I was right about the "5 hours" of extras.

The documentary "If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It" is around 30 minutes, and it has at least 30 minutes more in featurettes. Throw in a few deleted scenes, short interviews, FX shot tests, and promotional stuff for "Predators", and you're over 5 hours.

I hope I'm wrong.

I agree with you. We've seen what happens when studios tinker with films. I look forward to reading reviews and seeing comparison screenshots.

It's a Fox release, and most (if not all) recent releases look very good, so hopefully it'll look great. I've resisted the urge to buy the previous one due to the lack of extras, so if this one looks great (and that means grainy) it's a definite purchase for me.

The saving grace is that, yeah, it's Fox who're doing it. There have been a few, ah, missteps, but their catalogue output is generally looked after very well.

Still, Fox are on a hiding to nothing with this one. If they keep the grain intact - as they should - then the grain haters will go mental, especially as an 'all-new restoration blah blah' has been promised. And on the other hand, if the grain has been blitzed away then us DNR haters will go mad instead.
