I am going to guess that the 130k number includes Spider-Man 3 included in the box set as well as single sales. A very good number still, since Box set sales also included two other movies. If the previous 2 movies were made available separately, I think sales for the week would have been even higher.

Who will say this? Are you confusing hardware with software sales? I thought there were 100K HD DVD players sold (I bought one), not movie titles!

On a side note I did buy Transformers, The Matrix Trilogy and Batman at Wal-Mart last weekend (with my A-2). To go with Ratatouille, Cars and Pixar shorts this week on Blu Ray at Best Buy.

Remember this figure does not include the box sets... sez WickyWoo.

Yes it was hardware but I was reading on some certain board that is currently closed that every person who bought one of those walked out of the store with 3 or 4 software titles as well.

They could get 5-7 free titles. So it would be over 500,000+

Yeah but the free ones don't count in sales number. The people I was reading were saying that on average each person who bought a $99 A2 bought 3-4 titles on the same day (not including the 5 free ones).

But it will be interesting to see what share it has in the top 10, particularly how it does with Transformers in week #3.

The key to Transformers is that it sold a lot of hardware for HD DVD. At least for me it was partly the case, even at $98, having Transformers there helped to pull the trigger. Not sure how SM3 will do in that regard.

I see. I thought this was a Neilsen thread and we were discussing how sales would show up on Neilsen. If Wal mart does not report, then too bad about that. Wal Mart had a Blu Ray BOGO sale on and that does not register here as well. So it evens out.

I'd be surprised if Blu Ray does not have a 2:1 edge on software sales this week.

On another side note. Something that bugs me is when people say there are 4X or 5X as many Blu ray players as HD DVD player and hence a 2:1 ratio is not good. My response is that the cheapest Blu Ray players costs $100 more than the cheapest HD DVD player and the gap in standalone prices it is even greater. So, IF people are buying 5X as many Blu ray players, what does that say about which format people prefer? As a technology Blu is more compelling to more people. End of story.

To be clear I have players from both formats now and I am not saying that one format is better than the other (to me as movie formats they are equally good). But rather that one format is much more preferred than the other. That is just true.

I call complete BS on this. This is someone who's pro-HD trying to hock something.

The average attach rate for an HD-DVD player is 4, yet people who bought this deal were going with 8-9? Each? Right.

I've gone for 64:36

And BTW, I've been debating with rdjam who apparently is convinced that hd-dvd will win the format war as the Q4 numbers will be fantastic for hd-dvd thanks to the A2 @ $99, which will seal WB going red.....

..... anyway, he reckons 55:45....

I never said they would be counted. I’m saying that Tosh will claim that they do and should be counted and that they really won the week with those 500000 titles.

Oh I totally agree - just telling you what I read.

Sure there were some people who bought 3-4 titles at the same time but I bet a clear majority didn't buy a single one. Many of the buyers were people who were buying their 2nd Toshiba box, some were just the type of people who always buy super sale items just because they are on sale and really have little interest in HD-DVD, and some will just wait for their 5 free movies and rent or netflix them in the meantime. I bet on average over the whole 90,000 units it was a lot less than 1 title max bought per player for the firesale.

Wicky also told us that there indeed was a press conference schedule form WB last week......but it was only to go over release schedules.....and nothing happened.

to act as if wickys word is the word of god is not very accurate. Ill be stoked, and im not calling Wicky out at all since hes in a position to know these things above me.....but im also not going to trumpet his word as if its the end all be all.

Ill believe it when i see it.

The press release is far from ambiguous...

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Spider-Man 3 swung to the top of the studio’s Blu-ray roster, selling 130,000 high-def units in its first six days on shelves, according to the studio.

The studio shipped about 400,000 Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray units to retail for the title’s Oct. 30 bow, said Sony, making first-week sell-off about 30%. Sony said that does not include units bundled with the new $399 PlayStation 3.
Just FYI.
