Secret Window

Movie 4/5

I felt like it was missing something, i know its based off of a Stephen king book or novel. It kinda reminded me of fight club but in a sick twisted way. I liked the movie, and it has a great twist but i still feel like it was missing something.

12 Monkeys

Movie 4/5

First off i will have to point out the fact that Brad Pitt pulled off an amazing role as a mentally ill patient. As far as the movie goes, i thought it was ok, i was kinda lost for a while at the end but i put 2 and 2 together i got the point. The movie itself was kinda long for such a plain message. But the acting was great.

+1

just gave it a 5/5 myself a few days ago. one of my favorite adult comedies of all time (i think i have it tied with Wedding Crashers, but i haven't seen that in a long time, but 40 YOV probably beats it out). not a minute goes by for me without me rolling on the floor laughing. even after seeing it about a hundred times.

I had forgotten so much about this film but as a fun fantasy, so much of it works so well. Pity it is so underrated.

Blow - Very good film based on a true story about a man coming up in the drug business. Johnny Depp gave a splendid performance and I was pleasantly surprised by Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) being in the film and his performance. Franka Potente is a beauty and I may be in the minority but Penelope Cruz doesnt look good to me. I would rank this film amongst other great films regarding the rise and fall of someone living the life of a drug kingpin. Got Em!!

Overall Rating - 4 stars (out of 5)

In the Valley of Elah
- Great performances by both Tommy Lee & Charlize Theron. The film was also good in its own right. Very good direction and disturbing story about a soldier who is supposedly gone awol. Love the way the film paced itself while uncovering piece by piece of what took place. Got Em!!

Overall Rating - 4 stars (out of 5)

one of my all time favorites! i think it's highly underrated, which is shocking considering Johnny Depp is in it. a lot of people i tell about Blow don't know he is even in it or heard of the movie, which is a shame.

Saving Private Ryan

Film: 5/5
-I can't think of a better Memorial Day film to watch
-I noticed how much of the dialogue is soldier-military tactical language that is incomprehensible to the civilian viewer, but that is the way it should be, as this is a film showing an authentic war environment
-Hanks is more and more impressive with each viewing of this (and I've seen it dozens of times); Sizemore is a natural "combat actor" (This and Black Hawk Down were great performances: he is able to convey a natural demeanor of a soldier in the heat of combat, or at least as much as my green-civilian butt can tell
-A must-watch on Memorial Day
-didn't notice any audio-sync issues

PQ and AQ were 5/5, very happy!

Gave it 2 1/2 stars (out of 4). Pitt was good but bordered on overacting.

Moon

Film: 4/5
-Great film overall
-I deducted 1 point for two reasons:
(1) If a film intentionally imitates another film, it is asking itself to be compared to that film. In this case, the screenwriter obviously imitated 2001. The problem with that is: this is no 2001. Yes, its a good film, but its no 2001. I'm biased, because 2001 is my favorite film, but the screenwriter is inviting the comparison nevertheless. Its a disaster comparison waiting to happen, like some new rock band trying to sing like the Rolling Stones.
(2) Plot holes:
[Show spoiler] what was downstairs? multiple used clones? multiple pre-used clones? what caused the hallucinations? natural isolation or injected drugs in his food, which would then induce the crash? so was the hallucination/crash an purposeful way to kill each clone or was it done via. the vapor chamber or both? how do the hallucinations relate to the cloning? was the "vaporization chamber" merely a kiling device or a cloning device (i.e., was it needed for cloning? or was cloning done independent of the vapor chamber)?

-other than the plot holes and 2001-imitations, a very good film. Sam R did a great job in the role. His ability to show physical struggle, and verbal vulgarity (to convey emotional frustration) is unique to him. Sometimes it got too much, like with the switching on and off the music, but all in all, very good.

PQ and AQ were very good also, 4.5/5

Great review. I gave the film 3 stars (out of 4) and thought it was good but not great. I thought it had multiple chances to be great but didn't take them and I seem to remember thinking that thematically the film fell flat. The PQ was very surprising to me considering its budget. I loved the scenes on the surface of the moon. I think Rockwell was excellent in his role but wasn't as good as the Oscar nominees that I've seen.

Minority Report. I can't even put how I feel about this film into words. 10/10 across the board, movie, PQ, AQ. This movie is more than I ever could have imagined. Terrific, a masterpiece I will watch again and again and again. Acting is perfect, the plot is immersive and unpredictable, Spielberg creates a world that is so futuristic, but seems so real. Beautiful film. Simply beautiful.

Yea I havnt seen a lot of Depp's films so in that sense I aint a big fan of his. The more and more I see his films the more I like and respect him. He was excellent in this film. He kinda reminded me of a young Ray Liotta (Ray actually plays his father) with the way he was speaking and his acting pattern of a drug dealer at times. Very good film. Got Em!!

Yeah I think we're in general agreement. You hit the nail on the head by "had chances to be great," it seems to be in the "Knowing club" in that sense. I really really wanted to love it, but just didn't quite connect with it the way I wanted to. Like you said, the themes were hazy to me also, as I couldn't even figure out some of the basic facts from which the themes are structured. I guess I gave it 4 stars because it actually TRIED to be good, unlike all of the other "sci-fi" films in the past 5-10 yrs.

Live Free or Die Hard - Over the top, unrealistic action sequences, and Bruce Willis looking 70 years old. Still, you can't help but enjoy this latest and probably final installment of the die hard series. It's a simple switch your brain off and enjoy the ride type of movie. Thought they could have come up with a more menacing villain to round this saga off - but that's just a slight nitpick.

PQ & AQ is still one of the best around too.

8/10

I just got hit with "Prestige Power": how do we know
[Show spoiler]that there was any clones? And that "crash sam" (who crashed the vehicle) and "rescue sam" (who drove out to rescue "crash sam") aren't the same person? This is my guess: Before "crash sam" went out in the vehicle, he burned the face of his left hand with hot water. When "rescue sam" woke up, we can see in various scenes that his left hand is not burned. So its a different body, yes? Without that physical evidence, it is possible that 3 years of isolation would induce hallucinations of oneself, I would think?

Squid or Jhiggy: can you help me with
[Show spoiler] how they kill the used-clones before making a new clone? It seems like there are two possibilities: (1) tell 'em the 3 years is up and they're going home and get in the "space ship" a.k.a. "vapor chamber" , or
(2) drug their food, to induce hallucinations, then send them out on the vehicle, to induce a fatal accident out on the moon surface? this is what happened to "crash sam", no?

To some of your questions (I've only seen it once, so I am going off of memory);
[Show spoiler]I believe that downstairs there are the clones that have yet to be used. I believe the dead clones were reduced to ashes in the chamber that was supposed to send them home. It could've been an automated facility actually growing the clones. My understanding is that the hallucinations were an effect of the clone coming to the end of it's life (If I remember correctly the life span was approx 3 years). The crash was just an accident and I believe the only time it had happened. I'm trying to remember, I think the machine that was watching him (Kevin Spacey) was being a little annoying with all of the questions (Are you okay?). I would imagine that the machine was anticipating the symptoms to start (time-line of that clone).

My thoughts anyway.
