1. Watchmen - great story, faithfully translated (for the most part) to screen
2. Inglourious Basterds - Excellent all around 3. Black Dynamite - Hilarious parody, favorite movie of 2009 4. Star Trek - ST is back in full force 5. Bad Lieutenant - For a shitty cast, it was a work of art. Nic Cage, and even Xzibit did well in their roles. |

1. District 9 - One of the best sci-fi movies to come out in long time. The direction, story, acting and special effects were top notch.
2. Star Trek - Excellent reboot of the series from J.J Abrams, solid storyline and good action sequences. I thought the cast was brilliant, they all seemed to enjoy working together and as a result it showed on screen. 3. Inglorious Basterds - People seemed to be split on opinions of this film but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Christoph Waltz ultimately stole the show and there was no contest at the Oscars for BSA. 4. Sherlock Holmes - Splendid take on the witty English detective, Robert Downey Jr. continues to impress me more and more. Can't wait for the second. 5. Avatar - Groundbreaking special effects, it was an excellent ride from start to finish. |

1. Up- A reference in sentimental filmmaking. When I've seen this at the theater, I felt a powerful empathy that even linked to childhood in the beggining. The character elie reminded me of a friend at middle school I once had. It will affect people who had an emotional connection with someone.
2. Gomorrah- One of the best crime film I've seen, I'd compare it to the great crime movies such as The Godfather and City of God. People here do not die in some dramatic fashion or have prolonged battles; everything happens in a matter of seconds before you know what will happened. It's visceral and potent, but everyone here is vulnerable to hurt. 3. The Hurt Locker- I love this film, but not as a war drama or for it's realism. Those are aspects that the film fails on. I loved it as whis bang action film, much like those of 80's machismo like Predator or Commando, or even more closer comparison would be the modern video games we play, like Call of Duty or Gears of War. It's even directed by someone that makes it a speciality. It's an action film not about war, but rather about the warrior. It's not interested in romanticizing the enemy or those we cheer for, not for or against war; it's just an action packed fantasy about the mental state that plays the role of such an audacious task. 4. Inglorius Basterds- I don't need to say much, but this love letter to cinemaphiles, homaging cheap 60's cinema, spagetti westerns, silent films and propoganda that makes a world of it's own; much like Quentin Tarintino's previous films. The beggining scene and Christoph Waltz is worth the price of admission. 5. Broken Embraces- If Pedro Aldomovar isn't one of cinema's auteur, then he is close. Like Tarintino, he mades his inspiration his own world, this case of Fellini and Hitchcock to make his own world. Not his best work (How can you compare to modern classics like "Talk to Her" or "All About My Mother") but his most personal work. Last edited by Trogdor2010; 06-03-2010 at 09:27 PM. |

1. Revanche: incredible film where the actors' mere presence told the story. powerful non-verbal performances unlike most films you'll ever see
2. Coraline : fantasy film with endless metaphors (and lessons) about life. 3. Up: beaten to death in these forums. A pure tear-jerker. Dug is the sh#t 4. Gomorrah: great mafia film with macroscopic and microscopic perspective on the mob world. Demands repeated viewings. 5. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: I'm a closet HP fan ![]() NOTE: didn't see Avatar, Star Trek, Precious, Zombieland, Invictus Last edited by surfdude12; 06-03-2010 at 08:48 PM. |

1. Inglorious Basterds - Tarrantino shows that he is still the king of dialogue, even if it's not in English. Christoph Waltz is extraordinary in any language.
2. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire - Excellent film, punctuated by a terrific performance. 3. Star Trek - Abrams took Star Trek to new heights, while paying homage to the characters storied histories. 4. Up in the Air - Another great film from Director Jason Reitman 5. Avatar - story may not be new, or all that creative, but the setting of Pandora and the amazing 3d special effects are breathtaking. Honorable Mention: Coraline, District 9, HP: HBP, The Hurt Locker, The Blind Side Have not seen: An Education, A Single Man Foreign Films: Gommorrah, Revanche, The White Ribbon Last edited by kpkelley; 06-03-2010 at 08:56 PM. |
