I was going to wait till this comes out first before I buy. I have the first blu ray of Predator already, and I thought it looked good. I am patient enough to wait for a review on this new one. If it is better in PQ then I will run out and pick this up, or order through Amazon. I usually get something like, movies and have them delivered. I get them on the second day, and I get free shipping from ordering 2 blu's at a time. If Fox ****'s this up I'll be pissed, but at least I still got the original in blu. I really want the features and supplements that this has, but if PQ is bad or at least somewhat negative, then I will try and pass.

If - and I stress IF - this new release does turn out to be a DNR nightmare then we can't say we didn't see it coming. Still, I'm not gonna start bleating about Fox being idiots because they've done a terrific job with most of their catalogue stuff, and I'm certain this is just a blip, done in response to the complaints of the average Joe who says that Predator looks like crap on the current BD.

Me, I think it looks lovely. I wonder if Fox will keep the two SKU's going; one for the grain lovers, one for the grain haters. Everyone's a winner!

Then I would say double dip and sell the movie to grain haters.

The only reason I pre-order (and I don't do it often) is to show my support for a title's release in some way. Normally I just wait until the reviews are out to determine whether I want to buy it or not. But since this edition has been pegged as an all-new digital restoration, I put my pre-order in to show the studio that I support the restoration and its efforts in general.

Now, if it turns out that they screwed the pooch and DNR'd it to death, calling that abomination "an all-new digital restoration", I will cancel my pre-order and buy the original release.

I don't know how else to make a stand about these things. I would think that studios would care about pre-orders to incite buzz about a new release. A abundance of cancelled pre-orders may make a statement to the studios, or it may not. My hope is that it would.

Well said. I was going to say something similair but you nailed it. IF they've DNR'd the new release all to hell I'll stick with copy I already have which I'm already very happy with, just wanted the extra features. I'll live qwithout them if I need to.

I had doubts on how much better it could look due to the nature it was shot and McTiernan's gritty style. A gritty grainy image was pretty much his trademark back then lol

Dataspirit HD scanning as improved over the years, especially at higher resolutions (4K to 8K).

I know Predator as a distinct grainy look because of many post production tweaks -- I would just be happy that a new transfert encoded in something else than mpeg2 accurately reproduce the look.

If the new encode is as described above, many will stick to the single disc, single layer, mpeg2 encoded release because it will remain the best representation of the movie, until a new scan comes along that is.

A higher resolution scan from a higher quality source certainly would.
Sounds like that isn't what we got here

From what I have heard the words they used were "Digital remastering" which to me sounds like DNR. I never read anything about a higher resolution scan from a higher quality source I think that is what people were just hoping for.

Ah - but that's why I've kept the 2-disc DVD to go with my Jap copy of the current Blu-ray. And it doesn't appear that we're missing out on any new extras aside from the usual marketing bollocks for the new movie, so the existing DVD + Blu-ray = WIN in my book.

I kept disc 2 of the 2 disc dvd set from a few years ago and threw it with the MPEG-2 BD in a double case so that I'd have all of the supplemental material. Unless they restored the film for this new BD and refrained from using DNR I will be sticking with my MPEG-2 version.

That would be a problem lol. I thought it was a two disc set. I was mistaken.

So I'll go with getting the DVD extras and the original version. I wonder how bad it will be. Right now Predator is pretty cheap.

Hope the DNR thing isn't true. If so I hope it still manages to look a little better like T2 skynet ed. over the 2006 u.s. version.

If not...

I liked the look of the original and if it's been scrubbed then it's a definite no go for the new one. I also still have the dvd for the extras so it's looking at quite a bargain for the $5 I paid for the BD at Target with the infamous $5 coupon before Christmas.
