These two are not Arnold's best. I bought the U.S. release of Red Heat, had buyer's remorse after watching it, and sold it. I'll stick with Commando, T1/T2, Predator, and Total Recall. I would like to have True Lies, though.

I went with the region free US disc a while back of Red Heat. I think it's a pretty good transfer when you consider the amount of dirt, grain and rubbish I've seen on the film over the years. Expect nothing for the UK.
Some reviews: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Red-He...y/6760/#Review and http://www.dvdactive.com/reviews/dvd/red-heat.html Nice selection of extras. I'd be interested to see how it's handled in the UK. Always had a soft spot for Red Heat but Raw Deal is -sadly- a really badly made European film. |

That depends on your level of intelligence doesn't it. You're a stranger to me but since you are ignorant about the film I'll explain myself.
Produced, written and funded in/from Italy. Directed, edited, cast and photographed by British people. And Arnie only did it to get out of a contract (which was about to be sold on to an unknown entity which worried his management so the actor appeared but the whole project was rushed). Bad mix for an 'American' action film. |

I had the US disc of Red Heat imported to the UK. I thought it was a really good transfer. Nice and crisp with a much more involving soundtrack. Ok, it wasn't a Bond restoration or anything, but a good effort for a catalogue title.
It always looked very poor on VHS and DVD, so i was happy. As a long standing Arnie fan, i'll be getting Raw Deal. Whilst it may not be Arnies best movie, its quite a unique film for him. Lots of dialogue and a more reserved and, dare i say it, plot driven movie. I'm speaking relativly of course! ![]() I'm hoping Optimum give it a good spring clean, and a few extras would be nice. |

So I just got the UK editions today.
OK. So the films, if you're an Arnie fan, are awesome. I love the cheesiness of Raw...simply because Arnold is having too much fun walking around in $10,000 suits. Red Sonja is the best of the Conan rip-offs mostly because the guy who helped make Conan The Barbarian did the ripping off. But... The films themselves have not been treated very well. Despite the efforts of one of our forum members producing a decent featurette for one of the discs, Canal missed the boat on these. First up the prints do look like they've been given a good cleaning up. The night-time scenes, especially, look better than I've ever seen Raw Deal's broadcasts on TV. For the most part they've left the colour scheme alone and the films look like Eighties films. However...Canal have applied a shed load of DNR. Not to the levels of Predator but a lot of grain is missing from the film. At times you can make out the blemishes as the film stock adjusted to new visuals but always with a slight softness and too much smoothness. On the audio side, again, He Giveth and He Taketh Away. The DTS HD MA track sounds great with dialogue intact and understandable. For the first time, I can at least understand Brigitte Nielsen's mangled English. But again, as I've said, there is practically no interaction between the speaker channels and no crossovers. The battle scenes, from what I've listened of them, are all front loaded in the Left, Right and Centre channels. I've sure there's bass in the .1 channel but I've not heard it yet. The same goes for Raw Deal in the audio department. Overall, I'm glad that these BD's exist. I love Schwarzenegger and everything he does because he was the action star for me growing up. These are in my collection now and I have no intentions of ever selling them. For the Arnie fans on the forums, I know you either own these already or you've got an order with someone online to get them. For the casual film fan, I would respectfully submit that these films were never meant for Oscar glory and therefore be judged accordingly. But Canal should have treated them with more respect since they're releasing Truffaut and Lynch's work under their specialised Studio Canal collection. Those have their fans and I respect and am a member of said fan group. But I'm also a fan of these films and don't understand the disparity of treatments. |

Shame that Godard or Truffaut's works are treated with care since narrative driven (or arthouse whatever) films are thought to be enjoyed by film-lovers who are educated about restoration/film-preservation etc. but Schwarzenegger movies can be released with minimal efforts since they are/were supposedly only catered for Joe Sixpack. Which is totally wrong, especially in this blu-ray age where it's easy to obtain information about these films, how they looked in theaters back then etc. After all, these more "cult" Arnie movies (Sonja, Red Heat, Raw Deal) on blu-ray are enjoyed by a more educated crowd than the average DVD-buyer, as proved in the recent Predator BD comments. Maybe they'll even sell more BDs if they treat'em right. |

Well I can't comment on region C, but it definitely works in my region A PS3 and my Oppo. Looks about the same as when I caught in on Showtime HD. Don't expect miracles - about the best this one will do I think.
