Can't way for True Lies. Never bought it on DVD and will buy the Blu-ray near instantly (after the initial reviews tell me it's not borked anyway). I'm less fond of the Abyss than I used to be, so may no replace my DVD with a Blu-ray right away anyway.

I'm going to change the subject a bit after the good news about Cameron. Will Shrek and Shrek 2 be released in the fall? Perhaps around the same time as Shrek Forever After?

Van Ling said that an anamorphic transfer of the Abyss was done long ago. How come it never even got a dvd re-release let alone a bluray release?

Does cameron ALWAYS have to be involved?
Everything should be fresh

DGA has the right to approve all transfers, and no one wants to piss off someone of his stature, so yes, they'll wait for him

Anamorphic doesn't always equal "better".

In the case of The Abyss, it was rejected.

...And sometimes they get approval of complete box sets, even if they only direct one film in the series.

I know some people were looking for OOP Bandai Visual discs. CdJapan has a bandai sale going on that covers most of their Blu catalog. Expect shipping to be around $15 for the first disc and less for each additional. Most Blus are 30% off Japanese price ($60ish after discount)

Just read your most recent post on TDB and completely agree. It's a total shame that for many of the recently mangled catalog releases it may well be the last tangible-media release those films ever receive

While I don't feel any need to watch True Lies again, I must say I expect it should look pretty awesome on BD.

Cameron and his schedules. How that he is done with Avatar. Lets hope he will actually sit down and approve transfers of Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies. Im still very curious to see the Lowry restored version of the first Terminator as I have a hard time believing the first film could look much better than how it already does.

Is there any word on what the upcoming Predator BD looks like? Is it just a DNR scrub or a legitimate remaster? I'm happy with my current version actually, but am interested if there is a real improvement.

Hopefully it will look like it was shot yesterday and the veins in Arnolds muscles will be completely visible. Anything less is unacceptable. :-)

Regarding True Lies, I'm curious if any additional post production work will be done (or has been done) to digitally graft Arnold Swarzenegger's face over the clearly visible faces of Arnold stunt doubles in at least a couple shots during the movie.

In the movie's first action sequence Arnold's stunt double is running down hill toward the camera as a bad guy's snowmobile explodes behind him after hitting a tree. Even on DVD you can clearly see it's a stunt man and the stunt man is wearing a really bad wig.

During another action sequence set in downtown Washington, DC, Arnold rides a horse after the main baddie, Salim (played by Art Malik) who is on a motorcycle. Salim nearly gets cornered by in an intersection. A close shot over Salim's shoulder shows Arnold's stunt double riding the horse into the intersection.

Both shots are maybe just a few frames each and pass very quickly when the movie is playing. When you pause the shots they're kind funny.

True Lies on D-VHS looked outstanding...

Don't count on any major improvement. Predator, Robocop, etc etc simply are not high budget glossfests. Action movies were low budget and pretty disposable in the 80s, even if they were awesome. One of the beauties of Predator for me is that it is shot wild, on location, with all of the problems that come with it. It's a big reason why it's so intense because you KNOW they're mowing down that jungle for REAL, you know that they're out there in those trees for REAL. Everything I've heard is that Fox was very careful to do what they could to punch it up without compromising the integrity of the image. If you're looking to upgrade, look to buy for the extras or the free ticket, not an image boost.

Doubtful

My personal retcon wish like that is Torah Torah Torah with all the missing subtitles put in. My military vocabulary is pretty good so I understand the important bits, but it'd also be nice for people who donT understand any of it

I had one D-VHS - T2. Talk about a technology that didn't go anywhere .
I was really hoping that it'd help me record HDTV, but my cable company never activated their firewire port on the cable box.

I think that the only way PREDATOR is going to look any different from the current version is if they indeed do a DNR scrub--
most likely there will be no reason to buy this title again...
