Horrible transfer.
Yep, looks like someone rubbed Vaseline on Arnold's face or plenty of DNR was applied.

What's the age of each of the people who think the newer version looks better than the MPEG-2 version? Answer that and I think everyone in this thread will fully understand. The kids like the polished Avatar look while the adults want the film to look just like it was shot by the director.

based on that screen of arnolds face alone i dont know how anyone can defend this new version. not just his waxy skin look at his facial hair, its an indiscernible smear thanks to dnr. this is not the way this film is supposed to look.

The original release has a more film like appearance and its grain intact. If you want to see it like it does on a 35mm print, buy the original blu-ray release.

Not trying to be rude, just making an observation. The younger folks in their teens that think Avatar is the ultimate movie made in the history of movies do tend to have animosity towards grain and seem to love DNR. DNR is comparable with applying a blowtorch to most films.

The amount of elitism in this post is ridiculous

I understand where you're coming from, but come on.

I already prefer the original release since the new one looks like a smeared mess.

Come on what? You and I both know that it's true in the majority of the minors. I have read countless blogs, articles, and comments about this issue and this is why we have DNR titles from Fox and Universal on a regular basis. These two studios want to appease this DNR-liking-crowd because they know that their money or their parents money is up for grabs.

I do think Avatar is a masterpiece, I love the look of grain as well.

You basically said young people know nothing about movies. At this stage in the progression of blu-ray, I'd say most people who are buying Blu-rays probably know a decent amount about movies, including young people. Not to say there aren't people who love DNR, because there are.

I have an idea: let's have a normal version and DNR version on the same disc.

I'll be sticking with my original release. I think it's perfect the way it is and not gonna double-dip for a weaker version.

That is a waste of space, just have the normal version and let those who want to let there tv 'dnr' the image.

Except it doesn't; the difference is negligible aside from the filtering. When you have to pixel peep and flip back and forth to find some tiny increase in detail, then the (and I quote the press release) "all-new digital restoration" is just marketing BS and hype.
