I'm watching it right now and it's the best I have ever seen this movie. And trust me, I saw it too many times. Including I don't know how many in the theaters. On opening day, I sat in the theater and watched it three times in a row. That's how sad I was.

The above screenshot is the only one in the movie looking a bit waxy and I'm halfway throught. It's just one shot. You wanna know why it looks waxy ? Because the focus is on his shirt, not on his face, and his face is made up to look oiled, like in Terminator. Degraining the film reveals imperfections and make up tricks : that's HD to me.

The new encode is so good, you can now see some of the shots are out of focus, like the "we're all gonna die" shot.

Some purists might disagree it's their film, but I don't think it's as severe as the above mentioned Godfather series, where original blue shots are now brown. Here the color scheme is as it always was. The movie as just gotten a new shine. If you prefer the mpeg2 encode, good for you. It's available for cheap.

PS : Patton and Gladiator are crap. This disc have the edge on them all, miles away. It doesn't mean it's the ultimate edition in 8K scan or whatever, but so far so good. I doesn't mean either all catalog release will be DNRed like this one. Every case is unique. Do not let one unique screenshot of a 3 seconds shot fool you, watch it in movement.

I watched the mpeg2 version yesterday night and it looked like it was sweaty not oiled. Oil doesn't bead like sweat and water.

You children confuse the heck out of me sometimes. Classics are known as classics for a reason.

Children? I'm 6 years older than you are!

Just because a movie is a so-called "classic", doesn't mean everyone will love it.

On a positive note, at least there are two versions for two different kinds of blu-ray people. One that appeals to purists and one that appeals to those who want older films to be "clean and poppy".

I'm a colorist, so you can guess which team I'm on. I see a lot of texture detail gone. I see highlights flattened and I see lots of shadow detail crushed. Of course all of this makes it look more "solid", in the end to the trained eye it just looks processed and artificial. If you see more detail in it, then by all means enjoy this transfer. I admit I look at picture quality from a different perspective than most.

I was hoping this "high bitrate" nonsense would've died with the format war. But old religions die hard? The bummer for buffs is, this does appear to be a new transfer, but it's been so heavily filtered, it negates all positives, for folks like us. On the plus side, I don't feel compelled to spend more money on the movie Predator right now. and like I said, it is good there are two versions for two different types of people. What looks good is a matter of opinion. I of course just wish mainstream blu-ray owners shared mine!

Oh well.

Well, sorry then. It's hard to tell when you say Avatar is the best film ever made and have a cartoon character as your avatar.

Ever made? Maybe not. Top 10? Certainly. And it's a comic book character, not a cartoon character.

Its Jim Hopper...and if they release another version of this movie, I'll guess I'll just buy it again like I love to do with T2.

Now maybe I'm not reading what you wrote right, or you didn't write what you meant, but it sounds like I disagree with what you posted.
I think all he was saying was that technically "Remaster" does not mean "better master". Yes it is a remaster. But some of us just have an issue with how they remastered it.

and he's right about the people who did the work almost certainly had very little to zero say-so in the end product. Us technicians are just button pushers and dial spinners. We can say "are you sure you want to do that, it looks...weird". But the people who understand the technology are most likely not the ones calling the shots about the look of the master.

As much as I hate the amount of DNR, I can't cry foul for them calling it a remaster. If they were calling it a restoration, then I probably would.

Nah sorry if you think Avatar is a 'good film' and anything more than a forgettable visual experience then your opinions hold no credibility. It could have been written by a 3 year old and acted by corpses.

It's called different strokes for different folks. Everyone has a wide variety of tastes.

Liking Avatar doesn't destroy my credibility, no more than liking Godfather elevates yours.
