Indeed. I was gonna point out the critically dubbed awful films in his collection....

But why bother. People have a wide variety of tastes. Hence the wide variety of movies.

I'd say it's a pretty solid collection bar a few pieces of trash (Gamer, The Spirit, etc)
There's nothing you could point out that I wouldn't totally agree with as far as 'critically dubbed awful' movies go.

The above screenshot is the only one in the movie looking a bit waxy and I'm halfway throught. It's just one shot. You wanna know why it looks waxy ? Because the focus is on his shirt, not on his face, and his face is made up to look oiled, like in Terminator. Degraining the film reveals imperfections and make up tricks : that's HD to me.

The new encode is so good, you can now see some of the shots are out of focus, like the "we're all gonna die" shot.

Some purists might disagree it's their film, but I don't think it's as severe as the above mentioned Godfather series, where original blue shots are now brown. Here the color scheme is as it always was. The movie as just gotten a new shine. If you prefer the mpeg2 encode, good for you. It's available for cheap.

You can clearly see what scenes are out of focus on the original version as well.

Noticed this while rewatching the "grain" version a few days ago, for the first time on my Oppo. It looked much better than i remembered it, back when i was still using my old htpc.

The avc encode is much more crisp, better contrast.

Maybe it's a semantic issue, but for me, better contrast does not mean dropping shadow detail and clipping blacks. It will certainly give the picture more "punch".

I would like to ask a question here since I haven't seen either of the Predator films, and my qusetion is this - was Predator produced as a spin-off of the Alien series, because naturally several years later we had the two AVP movies and so I'm just curious to know if Predator and Predator 2 were made as Alien spin-offs or as seperate films originally, that later became part of the Alien series?

Yeah these pics look like the new Predator could be a DNR nightmare aka T2 Skynet Edition..

I do like grain..but I always thought the original Predator blu was too grainy.. To the point where it was distracting. Now if they went overboard with the DNR that can be distracting as well.

The Predator is an alien, and the Alien is a predator.

Haha, just joking...mmm not really actually, but Predator is not an Alien, spinoff that is. I hope its all clear now

There is a nod to the Alien franchise in Predator 2.

Dark Horse comics picked up on this and it all went on from there

I think so. I only asked because Predator came out not long after Aliens and I just thought maybe it might have spawned a spin-off because of the popularity and also beacuse they look very similair.

So, Predator was designed as a stand-alone film, but eventually the two monsters came together in various other medias and two films. Have I got it right?

The review on this site gived the old version only a 3.0 of 5.0 for video quality so it will be interesting to see the rating for the new version.

I agree, especially in the Fox title shot at the beginning of the movie. I bet you all the grain-hounds got an orgasm when they saw that logo

But seriously, grain is fine as long as it's in the original medium or the director's intent. After having watched the original Predator blu for the first time, I think (not counting the horrific Fox logo) that the grain is fine and not obtrusive in this type of movie setting. I forgot about the grain after the first couple of minutes into the movie.

Unless it's reviewed by the same person, it won't mean much.
