MPAA approval is not necessary for a film to be released, its 100% optional to have your films rated by them....its just not the best idea to not do it as there's a chance that theaters won't want to play an "unrated" movie as most audiences would probably be wary of it.

It's not like Inception is going to be a Ramboor Planet Terror style of film.
Precisely, its not a gory movie, its a mystery. The biggest concern for this sort of movie would be the nudity/language in the film, of which they could easily discern from a rough cut without final mixing and such.

I looked it up on IMDB. It says most of the violence was against "fantasy creatures". If it isn't human gore, they can get away with a lot more and get a PG-13.

It also says there was a few instances of male rear shots, but no genitalia or anything, which means ok for a PG-13.

I hadn't seen Beowolf so I was only presuming, but lets say they add in a few F-bombs.

If it is 4 or more, it will get an R.

You can go up to 3 these days depending on the rest of the content of the film.

I'm sure Nolan had 99% control over this film, WB probably only asked him to make sure there weren't any (or less than 4) F-bombs so that it can get a PG-13.

Optional or not you think Cinemark, Regal, Marquee, etc.... will carry an unrated film because i doubt it. I don't care if ma and pop theaters carry unrated films because they don't have near the amount of theaters the big companies do. Movies work like video games in this respect you don't have to have your game rated by ESRB but if you don't it's an instant AO rating and almost no store will carry it.

EDIT: I also just realized what you quoted me on was a response to Foggy. He said they could get the Pg-13 rating and then reedit the gore back in. I was pointing out that it would be pulled if they did that.

Yep, cut off a goblin's head and have "black" blood come gushing up like a torrent - and you can get a PG 13 rating (ala Lord of the Rings) - make it a human's head and you go straight to R. Poor goblins.

Male rear shots! That should be NC-17! Female rear shots. . . that's different. . .

It would be nice - that way we could keep getting original, well told stories once in a while.

Yeah, I mean that I'd like to see Nolan keep getting work and funding to make the movies he wants.

Only movie this summer I'm excited for!

Is it me or does Nolan pretty much refuse to cast a full-chested woman for one of his female leads?
