MPEG2, (used in the first release) is terrible for adding digital exageration of grain.
I wish they had just used the MPEG4 style codec and skipped the DNR, for this new release.

Seminal 80's Films

Platoon
Born on the Fourth of July
Top Gun ( I know it's cheesy and not great, but it left a huge mark on the 80's)
Raging Bull ( always thought that should be a name of a political movie)
Terminator
Aliens
I agree, there was far more significant 80s films, as well as Arnold films - Terminator being the biggest example. But you also forgot Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Pretty In Pink (or Sixteen Candles), Rambo: First Blood Part 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Tootsie, Beverly Hills Cop...

Robert,

Do you think a lot of the grain people are seeing in the original BD is not even actual film grain but "compression" grain?

Whether you buy the new or old version of Predator on blu, the most important thing is owning it makes you a goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus.

QUOTE=42041;3390732]there's a critical difference between being able to see the detail better, and more detail. First, that area is brighter in the new disc. And where screenshots fail to represent the disc is that the grain is random each frame, but the detail isn't, so your eye easily picks up on it in motion.

good points.
I think for sure the best possible release would have been a new master with less dnr.
that would have been ideal imo, but the modern template almost all these studios are going with seems to be "new master" + dnr = the perfect bd.
sad but true.
it just doesn't seem like much is changing on this front unfortunately as regards these older films.

Alright fair enough. I will 90% most likely buy it. I'll wait to see what this site reviews it like and a few others. Anyone see any U.S. reviews out there yet?

I'm just gonna order the (first release) Predator 1&2 box set, maybe and I say maybe I'll get the second for reference and then really decide on my own, but not very likely though.

It depends on who is reviewing it. I don't know what it got here but I would give the original release a 4/5 for pq as it is not without its issues (compression artifacts for example but for the most part is true to its source).

No me.

The only way I will buy it is dirt cheap (under $10), and that will be just for the extras.

Yeah, I'd give it about the same. 7.5/10 IMHO.

to me what has happened is the new master resulted in improved clarity and then they grain scrubbed it a bit.
That's the image you want to use? I've seen mannequins that are more lifelike than Arnold in the new transfer. Stubble isn't the only thing you should be able to see. Skin has texture, that texture should be visible.

I've never felt the need for a glossy version of Predator, because it's not a glossy movie. I would replace it if they truly "restored" it, and tightened up the grain and detail by giving it a modern transfer and a high bitrate encode, but supporting a half-way effort like this is sending completely the wrong message to the studio.

I hope the new transfers of Terminator and Aliens come out soon, I think those will be the test of how good mid-80s high-speed film stocks could look given a high resolution transfer. I'm going to bet the results will be much more crisp and richly textured than what we see here.
