Upgrading sound system, Any suggestions.

Hey everyone, I have a crappy JVC 5.1 surround sound system. I'm looking to upgrade for around 750 - 1500 dollars, any suggestions? I'm not to good with the tech lingo so links would be nice. thanks

Go with a Onkyo TX-SR605 or 705 receiver and Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Speakers.

The 605 w/speakers comes to a lil under $700 if you know where to shop.
The 705 w/speakers might be maybe $100-$200 more

BUT THEY SOUND AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

in that price range, yeah stick with onkyo receivers! You could probably afford to splurge a little more on the speakers too with certain Onkyo's

Greetings all, I was going to ask that same question but someone else did. More to the point, what kind of reciever is built to complement BD? I have an OK, not crappy, not great, Panasonic 5.1 system that sounds fine, but I am wondering about 7.1 or even 9.1, has anyone else bought a reciever just for there new BD player?

Good question. I have the Yamaha RXV 659 and send the audio from the Sammy 1200 5.1 analog into the Yamaha's 5.1 analog input's and I am wondering if buying the Onkyo 650 would be much of an improvement ?

I was in the same boat. I just sold my old (Ok) Sony 5.1 system and upgraded to my new Denon AVR-1508 and Definitive Pro 600 system-They sound great. For yours and my price range. I bought it at Bestbuy. I did also consider Klipsch Quintet III. (A little ear piercing for me though)

My Panasonic has the digital optical input which I have connected to the BD player. I assume this is as good as it gets sound connections wise? Like I said is it worth while to go to 7.1? What about speakers? I want good sound but not super loud, I live in a townhouse.

You won't get multichannel lossless over optical (copyright restrictions). You should get HDMI if you want more than 2 channels of lossless audio.

I just finished my Master Bedroom upgrade
I chose the Onyko 705 with Polk In walls
great sound
I am now going to upgrade my Family Room
to the 905 with my M&K 7.1 system

For your budget:
Sony's new 810 (6.1) or 910 (7.1) receivers. Specifically Blu-ray friendly, and with full audio and video HDMI switching (3 in, 1 out) Under $400 online.

Speakers; Klipsch Quintet II 5.1 system brom Best Buy. List, $500, often on sale for $300. The matching 10" subwoofer is $400, but goes on sale with the Quintet III for $250.
Total cost, $950 + tax & HDMI cables
Also, Klipsch will sell 2 additional satellite speakers direct to complete the 7.1 system when you are ready.

I have an Onkyo TX-SR805.. Great receiver. I would at least get a 705 over the 605. The 605 is a great receiver, the only knock on it being, I believe, that it is unable to apply post-processing to a 5.1 lossless audio signal. In other words, the 705 and up can apply THX, and Prologic IIx processing to the 5.1 TrueHD signal and split the rear channels to make it 7.1. With the 605, I think the only way you get the 7.1 is if the source material is actually split into 8 channels of which there is very little material. But at your cost, you might be better off sticking with the 605, and spending a bit more on your speakers. I'm pretty happy with my Paradigms, I don't have the satellites, but I know they make a Cinema series of satellites and they might be worth checking into.

...if i were you i would focus on improving your 5.1 setup...eventually you could add more speakers if you wanted discrete 7.1 later....

Onkyo's darken the picture over hdmi connection and soften it through a component connection.
Onkyo's are made in 3rd world countries, hence the bargain pricing, not made in Japan, or even China.
Onkyo's are known for running extremely hot, the major enemy of electronics components.

As far as speakers you should look into Paradigm or Def. Tech.

Regarding the Onkyo comments. What you say is true on the video stuff if you turn on the video processing on the Onkyo 805, 705 and 605 which uses the Faroudja DCDi. The 875 and 905 uses the top-of-the-line Silicon Optix Reon processor which is better than 90+% of upscalers in most components. My 805 is just passes through video, so no biggie to me. Clearly you haven't done your homework on where Onkyo's are manufactured. The Onkyo 705 and down, while great receivers, are not manufactured by Onkyo in Japan but instead contracted out for manufacture in Malaysia. My Onkyo 805 (and the 875 and 905) is manufactured in Japan by Onkyo on the same chassis as their Integra line of products. It does run fairly hot, I need to probably install a fan in the A/V cabinet, of course it also weighs 51 lbs to the Denon 2308's 28 lbs and it's amps are alot more powerful, also costs more than the 2308 I believe. I'd say the 705 and 2308 are similar, though the 705 does do the HD Audio decoding. Just thought I'd throw that in. Good luck picking a receiver. I will concur on the Paradigm Atom's recommendation. I have Titan's, but the Atoms are a great speaker for Home Theater, and a pretty darn good one for music.

Have you considered just upgrading your fronts and center channel and waiting until you have another 750-1500 to do the Sub and rears?
