I got one,

my ol' pal Godard once said,

"There was theatre (Griffith), poetry (Murnau), painting (Rossellini), dance (Eisenstein), music (Renoir). Henceforth there is cinema. And the cinema is Nicholas Ray."

I do agree and that Nick Ray > Everything. You all should stop watching pretty little colorful Malick films and watch They Live by Night or something. There, how about that to start things off?

Well, I just watched Pierrot le Fou today, and loved it. I saw a truck's worth of Godard back in the art school days, along with everything else you watch at art school, but it has taken this long to start revisiting some of them.

I have to say the picture just looked amazing. I wanted to eat it. In some ways it is a shame how much this film begs multiple viewings, since I barely have time to watch things once, nowadays, but I'm sure I'll be watching it again soon enough.

Haven't dug into the special features yet either. Oddly enough, if this hadn't gone out of print, I doubt I would have picked it up any time soon.

I was trying to look back to find anything on it, but how did it come about that Chaplin films was going to start being released by Criterion in December? How did that rumor start? I was wondering because I could very well see them starting to come out in October for all we know.

I believe it was a deal struck between MK2 and Janus and criterion hinted about it on facebook.

Oops, didn't realize at first you were asking specifically about them comng out in dec. That, I believe, has always been just speculation, possibly fueled by the idea that they would do a boxset of a few of them.

You know how it is, CG. All these rumors flying around by all these "in-the-know" people on the forums. I would think that, like with most Janus theatrical releases, the films are gonna have to run their course in the theaters before we ever see them on disc, right? I'm just thinking of stuff like "Close-up," "Revanche," "Hausu," etc. Who knows, though? Definitely not me. I'm not "in-the-know."

I'm just too "busy sucking on my ding-dong, (I do) just like Sister Ray said."

cc, I think I love you.

Also, being a fellow lover of the controversial, I have been reading reviews of "I am curious" and it being lauded for it's subject matter. I have yet to see it, but found a sweet deal on it and am going to pick it up. Just was curious if it lives up to the hype. I see "film critics" give it bad reviews, which probably means it's awesome.

Honestly, it's been many years since I've spent much time listening to Reed & company. It's taken a strapping young lad like CG to cause me to go back and revisit the genius of that period in time. I listen to something like "The Murder Mystery" and I'm captivated beyond words... my girlfriend hears it, though, and it gives her a headache beyond words.

I am curious, too. Actually, I haven't seen it, either, and have wondered the same thing because most reviews do laud it for whatever reason. I'm really looking forward to the newly announced Eclipse set, too, for Allan King because I keep reading of people putting his work in line with Pasolini's "Salò" and Dušan Makavejev's work. So, putting those two together automatically signs me up for the Eclipse set.

What can I say? I like the sick and disturbing aspects of this world. Blame my parents.

CC

I was just thinking today that it'd be awesome if Criterion (or someone, for christ's sake) would release Johnny Guitar. Then I could ditch my VHS copy...

You sir, just quoted my fav Velvet song. How did you know? White Light/White Heat is the best album of all time. No need to argue that because you can't. Sister Ray being the best song. A song about a transvestite drug dealer and some drag queens having an orgy with sailors and shooting up sideways (that I take it they couldn't hit it sideways), while I guess one got shot and died and cops came. Only Reed can write such poetry.

There should be a Lou Reed Day or something. Enough with Halloween and Thanksgiving. We need Lou Day.

Now it would be freaky if you quoted my fav solo Lou Reed song:

I agree that the improvement on "The Third Man" bluray is undeniable compared to the re-release DVD version and the original Criterion DVD.

However, I think the degree of improvement varies from shot to shot. There are some outdoor shots that are very soft to begin with and the bluray doesn't offer much there in terms of greater detail (not that you'd expect it to). But the bluray does give a nicer presentation of the grain of the film.

The main area of improvement over the old DVDs seems to be in the area of digital artefects. The original DVD was riddled with them. The bluray does away with these pesky blobs and smears. I don't know - could it be that some B&W films are hard to encode to DVD because of the heavy grain factor? Or could it be that Criterion's encoding technology was not so good back when they first released The Third Man on DVD? I suspect the latter, as there have been plenty of nicely transferred B&W classics from other studios over the years. Not that I'm wanting to beat up on Criterion - they have come a very long way, god bless 'em...

I just finished "Hunger". Of all the words I could use to describe it, "incredible" is the one that most comes to mind.

Watched a ton of movies this weekend. Pierrot Le Fou, M , Man who fell to earth & Yojimbo. All excellent movies. Although I had a issue with Yojimbo. It freezes at chapter 19 ( when they are trying to save the Sake that's pouring out of the huge casks ). I looked and looked and not one scratch on the disc. Anyone else have this issue? I'm using a PS3 and this is the first time I've had something like this happen. Pretty concerned since this movie is one of my favorites.

Did it completely freeze, or did it stutter a bit and then continue? I didn't have any problems playing the "Yojimbo" disc on my PS3.
