No Marine? Ever? Too bad.

Not a surprise. Having seen maybe 80% of the 70 mm prints in history, I only saw one that was (presumably unintentionally) grainy: West Side Story, in some sequences only. IMO, objectionable grain in 70 mm is largely a figment in the imagination of some of the people in charge of Blu editions, and one they are phobic about.

Bill just laid down the law about the new Predator disc at the Bits. Maybe somebody is listening (though I doubt it).

I just received Life from amazon.co.uk.

I'm TRYING to play it but only the intro for BBC earth would come on. The main menu or movie(s)/discs won't play at ALL.

any idea?

Assuming you're in the US buying a british version, it's possible that clip is 50hz, and US based devices won't handle that. Typically though, BBC does all theirdiscs at 60 so they can ship them all over the world.

Such a shame 50hz wasn't purged with analog TV or this wouldn't be an issue.

thanks for the quick response man

So to clarify, does this mean I can't play this video at all?

and secondly, will amazon give me the refund despite the fact it's been opened?

A few players will convert it, but it sounds like either your TV or your Blu-ray player can't handle it. I don't know 100% that there is a difference though, so it could be a firmware problem for all I know. Like I said, the BBC tends to author everything 60hz, so this would be a departure for them

Ill tell you all something that sucks. I just looked at the bluray release date list for July and August and didn't find a single release I planned on buying.

That hurts.

The entire series of the UK version is encoded at 1080/50i. Yay for the correct frame rate!

See this thread for some of the US Blu-ray players that support it:

They use incentives to pump up the pre-orders. In games like COD it gets you a weapon that would otherwise take a long time to earn thru playing the game. For adults who can't play all day, it's usually worth it. It evens up the odds a little in multiplayer for those of us playing against people who achieve every weapon in the 1st 48hrs. Also, pre-orders for some games is demand driven. Consumers WANT pre-orders for the big games so they can be assured a copy. I've put off pre-orders b4 & paid for it. As far as blu-ray, Amazon has a pretty good pre-order price protection policy. It has worked out pretty well for me.

Anything remotely grainy is WSS would be a dupe from 5250 stock. Dance at the gym, etc.

If one wants to actually see grain in 70mm, they have to run Woodstock, and even that is a good looking film.

I've seen plenty of 70mm movie prints with obvious (but not objectionable) film grain. However, all of those have been "blow up" prints from 'scope 35mm or Super35 sources.

Film stocks have improved significantly since the prime of 70mm blow-up print use in the mid to late 1980s. Back then a 70mm blow-up of a 35mm source would have significantly better color quality than a high speed printed 35mm 'scope counterpart release print. The 35mm version would look noticeably washed out compared to the 70mm version. I'm sure the quality of film projectors from the 35mm venue compared to the 70mm one would also be a factor. Nevertheless, if any imagery in the movie was natively grainy that grain would be there in the 70mm version. The only ways to reduce grain on a 70mm print is shoot with the tightest grain stocks on 35mm or better yet shoot in VistaVision or 65mm.

Right on the money, people forget that in Alien the "company" wanted the creature for their weapons division and the Nostromo crew was expendable. same thing in aliens the people on LV-426 became expendible along with the marines. the company could care less who they sent as long as they got their weapon.

Any chance that we'll see some more of the James Bond films released in November to coincide with the release of the new Wii Goldeneye game?

Also, when MGM gets around to it, will they continue to release them in the 3-disc sets? I bought all 3 sets and would be quite angry if they didn't release the rest of the films that way.

No more Bond until after MGM is sold, and probably not till the next Bond movie after that. The 3 disc sets are almost certainly kaput.
