ok, totally misrepresentation of what many of us are arguing for. We're not saying that we WANT all movies to be grainy movies etc.. We're saying that if the movie was shot grainy then keep it grainy, if it was shot clean keep it clean.

Also Waxy is NOT clear. Waxy is smeared and detail less, (kinda like this one). It's a misrepresentation of the original production which is what we're going for.

IGN gives it a 7 out of 10......says its better then the original....how many positive reviews is this so far? So maybe that 32 percent of people on here that say its better then the first release really arent crazy....maybe they really dont hate movies?

"Predator was initially released on Blu-ray in 2008 and the video on that disc wasn't very impressive. The grainy, dingy print just didn't deliver the goods. This new edition has been digitally restored, and the result is far better than the original effort. The picture is cleaner, sharper and there's a decent amount of detail in the shadows (though some isolated scenes look oddly soft). It's far from reference quality, but between the film's age and the rough source material, Predator isn't likely to ever look spectacular on your high-def system. Given the military focus and the jungle setting, the bulk of the color comes from the glimpses of saturated infrared whenever we see things from the alien's point of view, and that pops just as it should. Flesh tones and contrast are both right on target, and there's no sign of grain at all (likely due to the use of the dreaded DNR process). Don't expect a revelation, just an improvement on the first edition."

The Bottom Line
"When Blu-ray was still a new format, there were a lot of films dumped into the market without any special attention, no remastering or extras to speak of. Thanks to the release of the new Predators movie, Fox is correcting that travesty by giving fans a much better Predator release. It's far from perfection, but solid enough to please fans who held out. " ................YES!

People people people. Any great film is limited by the technology of its time. We now have the ability to improve the clarity of the original picture in ways that were not possible when it was filmed. I submit that this release of Predator is a better archive of the "original intent" of the film than any previous version, as it shows what the cameras "looked at" before it got onto grainy, inferior filmstock, which in turn degraded over time. And to me, that’s the point of owning a film on Blu-ray. If you like the way it originally looked, then great – there are millions of DVDs and VHS copies out there. Or if you are that hard-up to get to match EXACTLY how it looked in the theatre, then get it ON FILM and PROJECT IT ! ! ! Any digital home presentation is a high-tech VERSION of the original work. Why not make it as beautiful as possible ????

None of you grain-o-philes will ever convince me that if McT were filming this movie today, it wouldn’t look like District 9. Come on, now: let’s stop with this silly “they are raping my childhood” mentality !

NOOOO, DNR does NOT improve the picture. It robs it of detail. Cleaning Dust and specks away, that's cleaning it up, Grain is PHYSICALLY a part of the film. Yeah, you're probably right. If they shot it today it probably would look a lot better. But it's not, it was shot in the 80's and is meant to look that way. Our point is to love grain, but to love how the movie was originally created. Not how we'd LIKE it to be.

Getting upset over the new Predator blu-ray is the same as a Star Wars geek getting upset over Greedo shooting first. I'm just a casual fan of Predator and Star Wars, but i'm not crying about how the films are supposed to be. Most casual fans seem to be happy with the new Predator blu-ray. If you are a die-hard fan of the movie or obsessed with the fine details of film, then I can understand why someone cannot even watch the new Predator blu-ray.

Look at it this way:
Let's say you and your friends (with wives and girlfriends and children, hypothetically) have a dinner party and have a movie night together. You put in the new Predator blu-ray. Everyone is watching it and enjoying it. But during and after the film, you are the only one whining about "how the film wasn't originally supposed to look like that on this new blu-ray. And you go on a rant about grain versus DNR."

Silence...Awkwardness...Elephant in the room.

No one cares about the DNR issue except for obsessive movie/blu-ray nuts!!!

The problem is... That once this is accepted by studios it becomes a precedent. We would be watching 4x3 pan and scan movies with nothing but EE and DNR over EVERYTHING if these "film nuts" hadn't made a stink. Basically we're the ones who will toe the line and stand up to the studio's so they aren't lazy and deal to the lowest common denominator. so what if most lay people don't know or care about the difference. most casual fans don't buy movies really. 80% of the sell-through movie market is carried by geeky collectors like us.

Why do you think because of this movies transfer that now EVERY single bluray that comes out will have the same exact kind of transfer?? I can see if the Blu sold Avatar numbers or something it might spark some kind of idea but come back down to reality.....

every step back is still a step back.

And it's not every picture, but if this sells well enough some studio exec goes "hmmm, why don't we try this for our next effort" and it's a snowball effect.

That's the same thing I was repeatedly told ten years ago about OAR and pan-and-scan.

If you're showing Predator to children, DNR is the least of your problems.

Wow... this just happened to me last night and my wife looked at me and said "Listen, if you don't shut up and let us watch the movie in peace, I'm going to put on "Valentine's Day". I immediately refrained from saying one more word, and enjoyed the rest of "Predator UHE"."
