That would be Horizontally (Left to Right) Vertically is Up and Down - I may be missing something because magic seems to know what whippersnapper is refering to.

I would assume most libraries (atleast mine) file Horrizontally. Unless filing and being on the shelves are two different stories.

But this is how I also store mine, better laying on eachother then being piled on top in horiz rows.

LOL -- "What we have here is failure to communicate."

Yes, I also "file" my Blu-rays on a shelf starting on the left and filling out toward the right as more discs are added. The individual discs are placed on the shelves in the fashion of books on a library shelf, with the spine (the edge that stays together when the container is opened) pointed out and the bottom edge (it's about 1/4 inch wide and not to be confused with the "back" of the container) sitting on the shelf. I do not place discs on top of one another.

But storing the discs (inside their containers) as the opening poster is doing would be fine when space is an issue and as long as the "stacks" don't get too high.

I actually use Ikea Benno adjustable shelves for my disc collection, and am pretty happy with the decreased size of Blu-rays as compared to the DVDs. I suppose one shelf can hold over a hundred discs, and it takes minimal floor space.

Vertically, but running out of room, it may end up having to displace my huge DVD collection, which is starting to collect some dust.

I picked up a shelving unit from target, that has a door on it (three white padded squares on the front of the door, if someone else is looking to get it).

I have one for DVDs, and one for Blu and Box Sets.

These shelves are adjustable, so works real well for the variety of cases you get. Plus, having one on each side of my home theatre, with the doors shut, makes it look slick. I didn't want any open shelves, it just distracts from the decor. Plus, keeps dust off of things.

These are also well-priced.

I know the feeling, my entire DVD collection has been confined to four Case Logic Koskin folders each holding approx. 150 or so movies.

I think they're referring to orientation of the discs, not the entire collection. Considering a library can consist of one disc, I think their way is a better convention.
