IMO Thank the Studio's that they are "Trying" to bring us some nice HD Version's of our favorite Films!
If people start getting too "Picky" about "Oh this film looks too full of DNR or this film is too dark and grainy"! Sound like a bunch of babies IMHO. now I understand you want the studio's to do there best and that is cool with me also. but I hope a studio does not say "Oh the hell with blu-ray and these nit picky fans!" ![]() again this is IMHO. ---- end of line ---- ![]() |

It's not an opinion that the brightness has been boosted and DNR has scrubbed away the films texture. Grain is non existence and a moonlit night has now been turned into day. I'm sure everyone understands that you like the new look better, but it is not an opinion that Predator has been seriously altered. It is a fact that this BD looks nothing like Predator did in theaters. If you can't understand these differences then you're in a completely different world then everyone else.

I've tried, oh, have I tried, to dislike the new transfer--and understand, I do think the overzealous application of DNR is problematic--but, I'm sorry, I just have to honestly say the naysayers have taken this well beyond the point of rationality for me. Yes, PREDATOR is now too degrained, and that's a lamentable shame, but in every other way represents a quantum leap in terms of color and clarity over the original murky, dirty, inconsistent grain spiking, artifact-ridden MPEG-2 BD. However, I read Mr. Hunt's "rant" with open-minded interest and found it to break near even three ways with "Yeah! You're damn tootin'!", "Fair enough, you've got a good point there!" and "Well, now hold on, not so fast!" moments. Where it totally lost me, though, was with what I think has to be the most absurd, outlandish, irrational, illogical, out-of-his-gourd statement the otherwise dependable Bill Hunt has ever made in his history with TDB: "This [over-application of DNR] is even more important than the debate about Pan and Scan vs original aspect ratio presentation of films on DVD, or of colorization vs. original B&W presentation of vintage films on DVD, or of anamorphic enhancement of widescreen films on DVD". Um, no. No no no. NO. It is important, yes. Worthy of banging the drum and beating on the door, yes. But more important than half the original picture missing? Than films never shot or intended for color photography being jerryrigged into such with a pallette of faux hues? Than films being reduced to a fraction of their original filmed resolution, only filling up a heavily compromised portion of our home video screens' available real estate? Get an ever-lovin' grip.

I wonder if the original release will become a collector's item if it goes oop. I know a lot of the "purists" will hold on to their copy.
One thing I don't get is why some people are so outraged by this release, especially since they still have the option of the first release. I could understand if this was the only release available, which was the case with Gladiator and Gangs of NY for a while. |

1thing that always gets overlooked in discussions like this is the audio remastering, taking original elements cleaning it and bringing the dynamic range competely upto date. i don't mean normalize and make everything bad, i mean to truly clean the original audio elements as they do the vidoe end and make it sound better than ever before to make full use of all of our speakers, now upto 11!

![]() Agreed. And I personally have made compromises with a couple of releases where I felt that even with some problematic external corrections the HD presentation was far superior to anything that has previously been available. In this case, however, the DNR corrections have clearly affected the integrity of the image to a degree that makes it unacceptable. Additionally, unlike what some of the posters in this thread have attempted to argue, it is not a matter of preference, it is a matter of accuracy. All that is needed to prevent such a fiasco in the future is better quality control, the type that exists at Sony Pictures, Criterion, Blue Underground, Eureka Entertainment, Eagle Rock Entertainment, etc. Quote:

I concur, I really think this is a case of FOX listening to the fans complain about the film being too grainy. So, they "cleaned it up."
As I've said before, I was happy with the 2008 release and I'm happy with the 2010 release. I own several FOX Blu-rays and this is really the only one in my collection with a heavy amount of DNR. Honestly, I don't see this becoming a pattern with FOX. Even the trailer for "Predators" already has me excited to see it on Blu-ray because it shows a fair amount of grain and has a film quality to it. Here's to the future release of PREDATORS in theaters and on Blu-Ray ![]() |

I figured going in like Terminator 3, the picture (Pred 1) would be iffy but...the double pack was 25 bux for 2 BluRays and since I have both AVP's, it was a collection decision. I rarely buy without more research at this point but, it was an impulse buy. I went in for Monority Report and walked out $250 later. =/ |

My colleagues will tell you -- I am a firm believer that there isn't a single issue in this world that cannot be resolved through communication. ![]() We went through a similar phase back in the days when people started transitioning from VHS to DVD; many argued that Pan/Scan was good enough, but communication and education helped them understand what was right and what was wrong. We shall witness a similar adjustment with Blu-ray. Why? Because if we could all agree that loseless audio is right for all Blu-ray releases, then we can surely educate each other and agree that DNR isn't (right). Intelligent communication will heal the apathy. ![]() Pro-B |
