-This film is the reason why I think Zodiac (and Fincher) is overrated. IMO, they are the same genre: police detective thriller. Insomnia is far superior, yet Zodiac gets far more attention
-Why doesn't Robin Williams play a villian more often????? He was sick.
-Loved the setting. Another strongpoint that is rarely used: the mere remote, rural, isolated Alaskan setting provided a TON of background info that the viewer didn't need to be told: this is a barren, rough, undiscovered world, where you better have a guide or you're screwed
-If you have the DVD, check out the 17 minute Pacino/Nolan unscripted interview. A++
I liked the setting but thought it was a mediocre film. I think Zodiac is far better.

You cant say the hype because most people that i know viewed it twice or more in the theater!

So my next question would be are you guys trying real hard to bring down a awesome movie, or are you just blind? Or Do you just Hate Cameron?

Not trying to argue, just trying to understand why?

8 1/2 (netflix instant)

Film: 3 1/2 stars (out of 4)

There's a reason this film is ranked the 5th greatest film of all-time on They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? (which takes into account numerous lists). While I wouldn't rate it that high, it's def top 30 of all-time imo. I found the film enjoyable throughout and I think there's def enough substance there for it to warrant repeated viewings. What made the film so watchable is Mastroianni's performance, which was as charasmatic as they come. Fellini did a great job of shooting the film in black and white the ideal way, so that there is always a balance between light and dark on screen. Doesn't hurt that the film has more beautiful women in it than practically any other film

Highly recommended and I'll be picking it up.

Forrest Gump
Movie 5/5 Easily

This movie is very touching, and emotional but has its funny parts as well. Tom hanks is truly a gifted actor, he plays his role to the core. Forrest is a cruel world but he has a innocent mind and looks at life differently then those how surround him. This movie is a masterpiece and should be apart of every movie collectors collection. On another note my favorite is still The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button but i can ignore this film because it paved the way for this type of movie making. So BRAVO. MUST OWN!!!

Just like The Prestige, Fincher, 3D and other such topics, I don't think it's smart to bring this topic up again.....but since you did I'll answer!

Just because a film makes money doesn't mean it's good. Look at Transformers and the Twilight films--they make a lot of money but they're not objectively good films. The hype is the reason why Avatar was so successful--everyone wanted to see this film that supposedly changed movie history. 3D had a lot to do with it, because unlike all other 3D, it was actually used effectively here to the point of immersion. So, it's obvious why ppl would want to see something unique more than once. Hype is undoubtedly the reason the movie made so much money, there's no disputing that.

I liked the film but I def know why ppl hate on it--strip away the 3D and while original in creation, the story is a ripoff of numerous better films that had come before it, such as Dances with Wolves and the Last Samurai.

because marketing sells, not quality.

if I wanted to, and had enough money, I could hire a marketing firm that could sell $20 million opening weekend of a film that shows paint dry. Everyone would be talking about how "paint drying is the new cool/hip thing!!" Just IMO, of course

I never said the story was original because anyone can realize that they've seen this before somewhere else but it doesn't change the fact the he mastered it.
Dances with the wolves= Great movie
Last Samurai= Great movie
What Cameron did was intelligent, he took a typical story and redefined it with modern technology, and did it better than anyone in the game. If you're so stubborn(not you personally but people in general)not to realize this man has broken box office records, then you arent wise, and no one needs the opinion of someone who isnt wise.

You cant say that Avatar Success is based off hype, all movies have hype, its called theatrical trailers, its still up to you rather to go and watch it or not.

Also to add Avatar blu wasnt even 3-D, why did people buy it if it was based of 3-D technology.

I just think you guys are blind and dont want to admit to whats in front of you. If its a Cat then its a Cat, its not a dog no matter how much you wish

you just made a statement that had no backbone nor had any wisdom. If it was that easy everyone would do it brother.

I can honestly say that most of you say AVATAR is bad because you are dying to be DIFFERENT.

McDonalds sells billions of burgers, but they are still bad for you. Why? People enjoy junk.

Unoriginal is one thing, but when its a remake, at least call it a remake.

I thought the CGI was weak, especially the much touted "facial gesture" capture methods.

I thought the flight scenes in How to Train Your Dragon were rendered in a far more realistic fashion.

I think the floating planets in Dragon Hunters were prettier and had a more realistic "floating" appearance.

The Navi's tail movements were reminiscent of The Cowardly Lions "string activated" tail.

The dialog was awful.

Many of the actors did poor jobs. (tough job though with such a bad script)

The score was manipulative and prematurely bombastic.

I thought the "camera work" to capture the actions scenes was poor and the editing added to the loss of connection as well.

I honestly believe, that for 10 years in the making, it fell far far short. A story thats been told "EXACTLY" the same before and CGI that falls far short of Pixar, Futurikon, LuxAnimation, Mac Guff Ligne Paris and Trixter.

There's a lot more, but you get my point.

Just my taste. Feel free to enjoy it often.

If thats true, then how come it sold so many Blu's, if it was awful, people wouldn't go "Oh, I really didn't like that film, but it's been advertised on TV at so I'll get it anyway" no one see's it like that, and I'm sure most people didn't just watch Avatar once in theatre's, they went 2 or 3 times, I'm sure they wouldn't go to watch a shitty film 3 times at theatres and buy it on blu-ray.

If this flunked in it's second week, then I could say, yeah you're right, Quality doesn't sell a movie, but this movie doesn't apply that logic!

Ok this was a real answer and i can respect that. You have high standards when it comes to movies. That's cool but, do you look that deeply into every movie, or just because avatar had all this hype you paid extra attention to find flaws???? You dont have to answer that one. Just something to think about.

In regards to the McDonald's thing, of course its bad for you, anything good is bad, but people still like it because its tasty and convenient and cheap, its hard to make that triangle. Usually one is lacking. You might not like Mcdonald's but you have to respect their way of business, get my point?
