So I watched this film for the second time today. The first time I thought it was an average film with some strong points but nothing I really liked too much. This time I flat out did not like it. I could not engage in Cary's character and the storyline was just falling flat for me.
I am a BIG Hitchock fan and the fact that I dislike this movie (that many consider his greatest achievement) is hugely disappointing to me (even more so when this is one of the very few that is on BD or announced from him). So what are others thoughts on this film?? |

It's a little different among the vintage Hitch films. It's lighter for sure, but still one of his better films.
To me, Vertigo is the best Hitchcock film and one of the all-time best by anyone, and several others - Psycho, North by Northwest, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder and Rope are on the next tier. |

Carry Grant is able to sustain it because he's hammy and funny, but I don't really care for the ridiculous plot and silly climax. It's nowhere near my top Hitchcock films (Vertigo, Psycho, Rebecca, Notorious, Spellbound, Strangers on a Train, etc.)

I think North by Northwest is his most superficially entertaining film, but I'd rank it behind Vertigo, Notorious, Rear Window and Psycho in terms of being the best. And possibly Shadow of a Doubt, too. I like that one a lot.

North By Northwest is one of the lighter entries in Hitchcock's oeuvre. A fine movie that still holds up by modern standards, but not something that compares to his best work. |

To me its the humor and the dialog between Cary and Claude that make it worth watching. But they were both much better in Notorious. Personally I like his older films like Rebecca and especially Shadow of a Doubt. I was amazed when I found out that was hitch's favorite next to Rebecca. Also I prefer the old 'the man who knew too much' to the one with jimmy stewart. I find the new one hammy in the same vein as North by Northwest.

Whatever Hitchcock movie i've seen most recently is usually my "favorite." Rope is so damn good though and just might be his most underrated. Just tense, ballsy filmaking at it's best.

I watched it yesterday after picking it up at Border's 50% off sale this weekend. It is a very enjoyable movie to watch. It gets you into the late 50's/early 60's era.
I find it like a combination of James Bond and Mad Men. NbyNW's lead characters are like Don and Betty Draper thrown into a James Bond movie. Last edited by oyboe; 07-06-2010 at 09:54 PM. |
