I think it will probably have interesting themes to discuss, but I mean come on. The Prestige had themes (albeit ones that were partly ruined by the ending) and wasn't an Oscar caliber film. There's going to be way too many strong dramas at the end of the year for it to have a chance at being nominated, imo.

No chance in Hell. I told you guys last year Ponyo had no chance in hell of even being nominated. HTTYD may get nominated, but no chance in hell it wins best animated feature. With three animated features released this year, Dreamworks is diluting it's own brand, while Pixar just knocked yet another home run out of the park. Dreamworks really doesn't care, by the by - they're happy to just to keep pluggin away making movies, and more power to them.

Too bad Princess and the Frog wasn't pushed back to this year. P&TF is better than anything I've seen so far in the last 7 months, including TS3.

Oh, OK. I thought maybe you were referring to the "oddness" factor, or the sci-fi-ish vibe.

With Nolan behind it, I am hoping the story is just as important as the effects. Looking forward to it.

I am surprised you liked Toy Story 3. Since you usually crucify Dreamworks for including Pop Culture jokes and Fart Jokes....and Toy Story 3 contained both.

i dunno, if District 9 could be nominated i think Inception could easily. i dont think that deserved it at all and theres no doubt in my mind Inception will be a better movie. im not saying Inception will win, but i could definitely see it getting nominated now that theres 10.

I'm not too sure how you can say Dragon has no chance. Both that and Toy Story got fantastic reviews. What was the difference? Toy Story has its creative animation but Dragon has strong themes. Themes usually win out.

Oh, no, the oddness doesn't work against it imo. The sci-fi-ish (if that's what it is) DOES work against it though, since the Academy has been very slow to recognize those films (LOTR being its first major foray into fantasy).

Nolan's name doesn't guarantee a mixture of story and effects, to the point that the story wins out. TDK had a mixture, although the story and themes were horribly cliche. The Prestige was undone by its cop-out ending, but did an incredible job of examining obsession. The thing is, Inception may very well be a step forward--the trailer and information about it are far too vague at this point, but I still give it practically no chance of being nominated.

You make a good point, considering the number of weak films that were nominated last year. D9 had no business being nominated. Avatar and An Education, while good films (arguably) had no business being nominated. D9 was nominated because ppl were fooled into thinking it had a point, while Avatar was nominated SOLELY because of the money it made. Inception will obviously not do the numbers of Avatar, or anywhere close, and as it stands right now doesn't have an obvious marketing ploy like D9 (apartheid). But that's the thing about the embarassment that is having 10 nominations--anything can happen.

If they're gonna try to make it seem like any other company (than Pixar) has a shot at winning that category, seems like this year would be a decent starting point. Or else the award will turn into seemingly "Here's a trophy for being a Pixar movie."

I hope this year they put 15 movies up for best picture.

Hard to disagree there, but in fairness, the Pixar films do seem to be the best ones.

Which is the reason the Academy keeps putting out press columns asking "Could this be the year a Pixar finally wins Best Picture"?....EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

(We had ten nominations last year because they were hoping to get Up in there after Wall-E didn't...TS3 is far from Up or Wall-E, but never underestimate an enraged West Coast Academy.)

I'm not sure what your point is. Will an animated film be nominated next year? Of course. Will it win, this year, or any year in the foreseeable future? No.

Will they still try to campaign for the very next Pixar the very next year, starting as early as the week the movie comes out? You bet your hoppin' lamp they will.

So...your point is that Pixar is going to promote its film and campaign for it to be an Oscar nominee? Stop the press! How profound!

Nooo...I'm saying that gushy, Disney-struck LA Oscar voters are STILL going to A) think it's neato if 'Beauty & Beast happens again with Pixar, and wins this time!" B) think that Pixar doesn't deserve a "mere" Best Animated, and C) try and "avenge" Toy Story 2 not making the Picture cut a decade ago, which was why they created the category in the first place. Not necessarily in that order.
(Y'see, in Hollywood, they don't know who makes Pixar films, and think it's named for being made by magic pixies...)

It's been ten years, and they've never once given up SINCE. Each year, they think we don't notice.
