What a stupid article, the first time I read it I thought they had gotten rid of the HD release all together. But they just got rid of the box set.... Big F-in deal....

Man I got excited but that sucks, not a huge bourne fan but would have liked to see this NOT be released at all on DUD.

so basically the only thing they won't be getting is a special box to hold the 3 discs in, right? oh well, maybe this is a first sign Universal is dropping HD-DVD?

guys, i think you are blowing off one of the most important pieces of news since the paramount sell out. the hd dvd install base is low and the first two bournes have sold fairly well (for hd dvd), so a lot of people aren't going to be interested in a box set (think if spidey had the first two movies out before 10/31, that box set would have sold like crap) as they just need one movie to complete the collection. i wuold guess maybe 20k would sell max on hd dvd, despite many ppl owning the first two on dvd, it will still sell 750k on dvd simply due to the huge install base. 20k is going to make the box set turn up a financial loss, so it makes perfect financial sense for universal not to put this set out. financial sense is not something universal has been using so far in this war. im sure the hd dvd group would want a hd dvd box set and if universal was under contract we'd see them put one out and get a nice check from the hd dvd group. contracts up with uni it seems and if thats the case this is big.

It's a big deal. If you are trying to sell a format, having a box set of one of your most popular franchises is a selling point. Let's look at those on Blu..

Die-Hard
Harry Potter
Spider-Man
Ocean's..

This is a bizarre move to me..

can you guys imagine if disney annoucned a box set of pirates and said "no blu-ray for this box set" we'd all be saying, what gives? when movie studios start cancelling/not releasing titles its not a good sign (yeah im talking about mgm too).

The only difference is, MGM is owned by Fox. With a lot of titles to compete with, it may make sense to release at a different time. Let the holiday rush subside and then come back later with more catalogue titles.

Fox has a home video distribution agreement with MGM. MGM is owned by Sony, Comcast, TGP Capital and some Vegas interests.

MGM operates totally independently to Sony and Fox.

heres why this is such a big deal. on the outside universal has made zilch financial sense in this war. this is because they are being paid big bucks from the hd dvd promo group to basically put out everything the can, as fast as the can, so that hd dvd can at least have a similar number of titles when compared to blu-ray. i don't know if you were here last summer, but some weeks universal was putting out 16 titles a week. universal didn't care that 14 of the 16 didn't even hit 5 figures in total sales. why? because they were fulfilling contractal obligations that made them more money off hdm than they could possibly make off hd dvd. surely hd dvd group would want a box set and if universal was still under a contract with them or had things to fulfill in it we would see a box set. so the fact that there is not box set makes me think the contract is up.

You know, it does seem kind of odd they're not trying to capitalize on the huge new install base HD-DVD has added lately.

I agree. Would Universal have seen things differently if they saw the install base of HD-DVD owners growing substantially over the holidays? I know if I just bought an HD-DVD player I would snap at the Bourne Box set.

No big deal here, the thing is most HD-DVD people have already purchased the Bourne Identity and Supremacy, why would they then buy the trilogy too, especially when it's EXACTLY the same?

I agree. I think this is just like the MGM situation. The pre-books were probably looking lousy, and so they decide to kill it due to a lack of demand.

I don't think that will really happen, although I hope it does, but I'd buy the Bourne trilogy in a heartbeat if it was on Blu-ray.

Yeah, I mean, 90,000 A-2s just flew off the shelves at Walmart and Best Buy. At least one or two of those thrifty shoppers would buy the box set, wouldn't they?

Actually, it might help HD DVD's numbers by Nielsen/Videoscan count. A box set only counts as one, where individuals each count. And the latest Toshiba HD DVD players already include the first one in the box, so not a lot of reason for those people to buy the box set instead of just the 2nd two. The box set might have been good for them for Christmas presents though.

Is Disney selling a box set of the Pirates movies on Blu-ray? I don't see one on Amazon.
