Videodrome - What the hell was this?? This was an absolutely crazy arse film! I have to admit the special effects were very good for 1983. Also Deborah Harry was gorgeous. The movie however was just way out there. Whoever came up with that concept must have been super high on some strong acid haha. I am a huge horror fan and I like some original ideas but this one was to out there for me. I hear they may do a remake to this film to. Watch out! Haha.

Film Rating - 1 star (out of 5)

Got Em!!

There is a ton of philosophy behind it. Read into it and I bet you'd like it a bit more.

Watched these while on holiday (and I’ll use the tag on them to condense; thank you iam1bearcat for this good idea!):

Eragon” on the telly.

[Show spoiler]I keep hearing that the book is way better than this film; I’ll need to check it out someday. On its own merits, “Eragon” comes off as a pretty average fantasy adventure. It has magic and dragons and swordfighting, sure. It has pretty typical character archetypes (there’s a wise old man, a reluctant hero, a really evil bad guy, etc).

The spectacle of the film is decent; action and special effects do impress. But there really isn’t that much of it. As a film, the movie has good photography, but acting seems average and the writing is uninspiring.

One last gripe: I hate the end credits song.

Meh…

3/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 3/5, film: 3/5)

Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta,” aka “Castle in the Sky” on DVD.

[Show spoiler]Miyazaki is the man. All of his works seems to exhibit exceptional storytelling ability, combined with fantastic imagery and high quality animation. “Castle in the Sky” is one of his more exciting works, and is probably my personal favorite of his.

As I said, the animation quality is superb and the visuals are awesome. This movie is especially unique as it combines steampunk fantasy with aerial combat, ancient lost cities, and perhaps a bit of sci-fi in the mix. The environment is very imaginative, and is cram-filled with all kinds of props, sets, vehicles, weapons, etc that all feel genuine and seems to fit into the world with purpose. It’s as immersive as it is fantastic.

The story is excellent; it picks up really well toward the end
[Show spoiler]when they finally reach the lost city and introduce a new set of mysteries and discoveries
. Characters are great to watch. It’s a little disconcerting that
[Show spoiler]Pazu and Sheeta never developed a full relationship beyond mere friendship; then again, perhaps they weren’t supposed to, since they’re just kids…who knows?

I consider this film to be one of the most essential fantasy adventures, as well as essential anime.

5/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 5/5)

Superman: The Movie” on DVD.

[Show spoiler]I’ve been meaning to revisit this film; loved it as a kid, but does it really hold up to this day?!

To get the negatives out of the way, I found that the film dragged a little here and there, the ending seemed to come way too fast, and I find that the film has its share of really absurd moments; Clark Kent apparently morphs into Superman in midair, Lex Luthor has a high-tech underground lair (don’t know how that’s possible), and there’s the epic climax
[Show spoiler]where reversing the world’s rotation causes time to go backwards
! Uh huh….

The sillier and campier moments of this film aren’t too distracting or too out-of-place; in a world where a man can fly and shoot freaking laser beams out of his eyes, it’s still pretty earnest. And it’s nowhere near as stupid as the third and fourth films.

The special effects are a bit of a mixed bag and make the film a little sillier though. Some hold up really well and are fantastic. Others show their age pretty horridly.

Regardless of all this, the film is still entertaining and excellent. It feels really epic in a way. The first half has lots of wide-open spaces and dramatic moments that establish the characters really well. The second half presents all the excitement, loaded with memorable moments.

It’s all very well-filmed and very well-designed (even if some SFX, props, and costumes seem dated). Acting and writing are superb. Music is excellent (should really get the soundtrack!).

On this viewing, I can see a closer correlation to “Superman Returns;” I really should watch that one soon.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4.5/5)

Yes you should!

I found "Pi" a little bewildering on the first viewing, but after thinking about it it clicked in my head and now I love it. Same thing happened with "The Fountain" (thanks to jhiggy for helping me understand it).

Ride With The Devil

Film: 2/5
-beautifully shot, lovely landscapes, etc
-however, I never got engaged by the plot/script. Half-way through I became quite uninterested and put the film on 1.5x speed (haven't done that since Watchmen), to get to the end. I still have no idea where the screenwriter or Lee were trying to take me with the characters. And Tobey McQuire, while he's great in Spiderman and Seabiscuit as the goofy, dorky guy he plays, that's all the can play and it really limited him here, IMO.
-PQ and AQ were great.

Dan In Real Life(Blu Ray)

Director: Peter Hedges

Cast: Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, Dane Cook

PQ:4/5
Dan In Real Life looks really well on blu ray. The colors are nice and stand out nicely. Nothing to really complain about.
AQ:4/5
Very good for a film in this nature, which is 90% dialogue. The music that was in this sounded great and very well mixed. nothing to complain about except that the back speakers were not used that much.

Film:4/5
I knew I was going to love this film within the first eight minutes. Watching this film, I gained this feeling of that I knew these people and I knew who they were. The cast did a real good job of feeling as one family. They had that down perfectly. I actually felt that many of the characters were based out of my family. This film was pretty funny but imo it was more of a drama, which is what I think was intended. So do not go into this thinking you will be laughing the whole time.

Steve does a great job being something other than his typical funny guy in his role. He gave a heartfelt performance and he made you feel for him.
Dane Cook was actually really good in this as well. I will admit I have been put off by this film because of him and I wish now that I wouldn't have been. I like Dane as a standup but I wasn't sure about him bc I've seen his other roles and I wasn't thrilled by them, but he was legit in this.

The point of the film was really well thought and it was nice to see how everything unfolded. Def a great film. I would of gave it a 4.5 but I just didn't think it deserved it. I will say that I could watch this over and over and it will be just as good the next time. I def recommend this to everyone!

I was wary of blindbuying it so I thought at that price I just had to get it, as it was written for the screen and directed by Richard Kelly. The person who brought us Donnie Darko (9.5/10 from me) and Southland Tales (6.5/10 from me).

This movie has a hint of David Lynch in it, which I thought was great, it has mystery, it's odd, strange, creepy and eerie. Me and my gf were very much hooked on it, as it was totally unpredictable which is often a big plus. The Blu-ray looks quite good, it has a kind of a slight hazy (dream like) and golden look to it, I think it was meant to convey the feel of the 70's. I could easily tell it was shot with digital cameras, but it looked fine, not jawdropping as it looked a bit soft at times, but very pleasing anyways. Oh well back to the movie, themes of morals and consequences pretty much, that's all I'll reveal to you guys. Go see it blind, works best that way. The acting was fine, Cyclops from X-men who plays the husband did a great job, Cameron Diaz did it ok but it didn't distract me, Frank Langella is always great and certainly did his part in the movie. It's either a love it or hate it (or boring) movie. The CGI in the movie isn't the greatest but it didn't annoy me because the story and the slow unfolding of the story really captured me and my gf, mostly emotionally. The score was unusual, it affected me positively, it was "underplayed" so to say and gave a special mood to it.

I am surprised it has a low IMDb score of 5.9/10 and 45% from Rottentomatoes, but don't let that discourage you, I welcome a different experience, hopefully you do too.

8.5/10 from me and 8/10 from my gf
Surfdude, Squid and jhiggy I think you guys will have interest in this, go rent it!
I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

A few days ago I watched The Return, which was an incredible film but had NO definitive answers. That film succeeded even more because of this choice. Some films aren't successful when they do it. Interesting to see if this one pulls it off.
An unfullfilling ending wouldnt bother you?

I dont need an answer to every question. I dont need clear resolution to every issue. Take Doubt for example. Tastefully done and well executed. We never learn the truth. We are left with only our own opinions and nothing more. But at least the story was completed.

The White Ribbon isnt like that. Its abrupt. Its so abrupt that it feels like they aborted the project. Its jarring.

My point is, finish the story. You dont have to give me the answers I was hoping for. You dont even have to give me answers...just finish the movie. It was like the perfect place for an intermission, not an ending.

I def don't fault you for feeling that way. For me, it depends on the film. Some use it very well, like Children of Men, and some don't. The absolutely epitome of this is the film I saw the other day, The Return. It's abrupt and doesn't answer any of the main questions and doesn't resolve anything. But it's an absolutely brilliant ending because it really makes you think about what the film means to you. I reallly, really hope you and the other Club Loop members give it a shot because it would def lead to some great discussion.

I honestly can't figure out a palatable way for Haneke to end the movie. It obviously didn't bother me as much as it did you though.
