My top 25 (sorry 50 is just too many for me) - I did use some animated stuff that I feel can fit the sitcom banner:

1. The Simpsons
2. How I Met Your Mother
3. Futurama (Debateable choice but I think it kinda is)
4. Arrested Development
5. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
6. Scrubs
7. That 70's Show
8. Undeclared
9. 30 Rock
10. Entourage
11. The Office (U.S.)
12. The Loop (So short-lived but brilliant)
13. Grounded for Life
14. Greg the Bunny
15. Big Bang Theory
16. My Name is Earl
17. King of Queens
18. King of the Hill
19. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
20. Spaced
21. Eastbound and Down
22. Extras
23. Modern Family
24. Andy Ritcher Controls the Universe
25. 60's Batman

Czar, I thought this was a sort of a challenge to everyone, so I gave it a go (thank goodness I have a decent length train commute). It is tough to rank from about 25-50, but I tried. Here is my list:

1. Soap
2. M*A*S*H*
3. Cheers
4. The Simpsons
5. Arrested Development
6. The Honeymooners
7. Friends
8. The Cosby Show
9. Frasier
10. Night Court
11. The Dick Van Dyke Show
12. I Love Lucy
13. The Carol Burnett Show
14. The John Larroquette Show
15. The Flintstones
16. Scrubs
17. Family Ties
18. Newsradio
19. The Big Bang Theory
20. Dream On!
21. Home Improvement
22. The Drew Carey Show
23. The Muppet Show
24. WKRP in Cincinnati
25. Married…with Children
26. Seinfeld
27. Monk
28. Growing Pains
29. Silver Spoons
30. Mork and Mindy
31. How I Met Your Mother
32. Wings
33. Green Acres
34. Newhart
35. The Monkees
36. Taxi
37. Sanford and Son
38. The Munsters
39. Get Smart
40. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
41. The Larry Sanders Show
42. Spin City
43. Psych
44. Undeclared
45. Happy Days
46. Laverne and Shirley
47. Welcome Back, Kotter
48. The Beverly Hillbillies
49. Futurama
50. Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place

I found that I really wanted to put Charles in Charge on the list, but didn't really want to remove anything. Also, my feelings about Soap being the best sitcom ever are documented in other threads, but it is such a funny, original and controversial show, even when I watch the DVDs today.

Very nice list. We have similar taste. Also I did bold some that arent on my list as they didnt make my top 50 cut, but sitcom's like the Dick Van Dyke Show & Beverly Hillbillies are still very good and I do enjoy them.

Soap is a great sitcom. I havnt seen it in ages but remember it had a great cast, very raunchy and starred other people who were also on other sitcom's. Love the mom from Who's the Boss on Soap, she was hilarious. Got Em!!

CZAR, i love this post!! so i'm bumpin it with my own rankings.

keep in mind, guys, i was born in 1986, and also it's good to know that I LOVE tv, hope to write for a tv show some day, and truly watch almost all sitcoms that are on today (until i decide whether i like them or not...and i usually give them at least a season to decide)

lmao, and i agree with a previous poster about you likin those shows with a Black/ethnic cast...perfectly fine with me though...you like what you like, and that often has to do with how you are raised and what you watch growing up, and who you are. even though to me a lot of these shows are not up to qual with a lot of my faves (with 'whitey')...lmao that post just cracked me up, sorry!!!

oh, and i've given all the old shows a shot, but honestly they were before my time and not too many make the cut. just the facts of life!

note that i also don't include shows like Monk or Psych, i consider them a different genre than Sitcom...i put them in the same category as Burn Notice, Chuck, etc....action/comedy, etc....not sitcom.

1. Scrubs (hands down)
2. Seinfeld
3. How I Met Your Mother
4. King of Queens
5. The Office (USA)
6. Arrested Development
7. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
8. Parks and Recreation (NO JOKE!!! I LOVE IT)
9. Spin City
10. NewsRadio
11. Friends
12. Home Improvement
13. Big Bang Theory
14. Three's Company
15. Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place
16. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
17. My Wife and Kids
18. 30 Rock
18a. (forgot it!) Less than Perfect
19. Entourage
20. Curb Your Enthusiasm
21. The Office (British)
22. The IT Crowd (British)
23. Cheers
25. Hangin' With Mr. Cooper
26. Sanford and Son
27. Leave it to Beaver
28. Boy Meets World
29. Step by Step

I did my best to avoid any animated programming (maybe that could be another thread, top 25 animated shows)

As someone who does not watch a lot of TV this was not too hard really, probably because I did watch a lot more when I was younger as to know it is movies and sports.

Shoot, I forgot about Less than Perfect....I was a huge fan. You consider Monk a sitcom? I don't know...I just don't.

I'm an American, but ever since I first saw Fawlty Towers 20 years ago I've enjoyed British comedy more than our own, even going to the expense of importing DVD's.

I'll list 25 UK, and then 25 US comedies:

UK:

1. Father Ted (funniest TV show ever IMO)
2. The Vicar of Dibley
3. Blackadder
4. One Foot in the Grave
5. Spaced
6. Only Fools and Horses
7. Fawlty Towers
8. Coupling
9. Men Behaving Badly
10. The IT Crowd
11. Black Books
12. Peep Show
13. Red Dwarf
14. Gavin and Stacey
15. My Family
16. The Young Ones
17. Green Wing (if only the 2nd series didn't suck)
18. Ab Fab
19. Dad's Army
20. Bottom
21. Two Pints of Lager
22. Are You Being Served?
23. Allo Allo
24. My Hero
25. Keeping Up Apperances

Thats just about all that I can think of actually that I've seen.

US:

This list is going to be heavy with more recent shows. I wasn't born until 1980, and I watched very little TV as a child.

1. Friends
2. Seinfeld
3. Cheers
4. Scrubs
5. Futurama
6. The Simpsons
7. Three's Company
8. I Love Lucy
9. MASH
10. The Big Bang Theory

I won't order the rest:
Happy Days
Honeymooners
Married.... with Children
Modern Family
How I Met Your Mother
Community
Home Improvement
The Cosby Show
Frasier
That 70's Show
Taxi
Roseanne
Everyone Loves Ramond
Fresh Prince of Belair
Happy Days
SOAP
All in the Family

Also, I can't believe so many of you like the old TGIF shows.... god most of those sucked.

Welcome Back Kotter
Family Matters
Kenny Vs. Spenny (is this a sit-com?)
The Addams Family
Alice
WKRP in Cincinnati
The Munsters
Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.
Laverne and Shirley

I don't know if any of you would consider this a sit-com, but if you do, it would move into my number two spot... Northern Exposure.
