What a great performance by him.

I was pretty lost during this whole film, so I didn't enjoy it very much and I found myself nodding off a few times. After it was over, I realized that I kinda liked the style of the film and the mood, but if I understood the bloody thing, I might actually appreciate it more! After just watching 8 1/2 and this, I'd say that I'd probably be a lot more fond of Marienbad if I came to understand it. The lady was pretty good lookin though, so that helped some lol

Jhiggy, wanna help me out on this one
Like I said before, there's no definitive explanation for the film--even the director says so. Holmes has one interpretation, which is completely legitimate, I have another.

[Show spoiler]I believe that the lead guy met the woman last year at Marienbad, while she was with her significant other--the creepy guy. They had an affair, he caught them, then he killed the lead guy but it was never proven. The lead guy is a ghost and has been waiting to see her again. She has forced his death out of her mind, the way many trauma victims attempt to do. He tries to convince her that they did indeed meet and fall in love last year. The last few scenes of the film, imo, show that he was a ghost and that he is to wander the halls of that hotel/chateau for eternity, just hoping she will come back and he can spend time with her. In a way, it's like a mini-loop! This isn't hell like in Triangle, but still. I like this interpretation and I'm gonna stick with it (since there is no correct interpretation) because I think it's at once tragic and very romantic.

[Show spoiler]He was "cured", but couldn't live with knowing reality so he faked having reset back into his delusion to get lobotomized.

That was my take on it anyway.

i just watched Disney's Meet The Robinson's. It just arrived yesterday as my birthday gift from Disney. The PQ and AQ, as always from Disney, was awesome. the movie itself is ok, one of Disney's weaker computer animated efforts, IMO. i understand they had several problems getting it onto the screen.

[Show spoiler]Leo's characters last words were
"Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?"
Which to me means he'd rather have the lobotomy than to live with himself.

I like that one. For some reason, the zaniness of it all appeals to me.

Touching the Void - 8.5/10

Was actually reading up on Danny Boyle's upcoming film '127 Hours' and was redirected to this fantastic documentary. It tells the story of two friends who travel to Peru and climb Siula Grande, a 20,814 ft mountain that no one had ever summited before. I thought it would be about the impossible journey to the summit but found out it was the harrowing sequence of events on the way back down. In the mountaineering community this is a legendary story or survival. If you have any interest of the outdoors or just a good documentary in general I highly recommend checking this out.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - 8/10

Was pretty displeased that I missed this at the local art theater two weeks ago. I thought I would have to wait forever to see this but to my surprise I found it on Netflix Instant! Aside from the
[Show spoiler]
3 rape scenes

I enjoyed tremendously. I wouldn't call the story original or unique by any means but the execution is brilliant. It reminded me of Tell No One, which I would still say is a better film, but don't miss out on this. Just make sure you aren't with the girlfriend/wife/kids when you watch this.

I'm not sure which I like better, Tell No One or Tattoo. Both are obv excellent. I can understand not thinking Tattoo is original, but its heroine and themes certainly are unique to the genre. The entire series is about violence against women and I find it pretty awesome that it translated to screen that way. The rape scenes were absolutely, positively essential to the story. If they were taken out, the film wouldn't have been as successful. Not to mention, and there's no way you'd know unless you've seen the second installment or read the books, those rapes are unbelievably important to the second and third books.

I completely agree with your assessment in that the heroine is unique to the genre. As for the rape scenes I didn't know they played a huge part in the second or third books. I knew that it was essential to the story, but it still doesn't make me enjoy them any more. In a way, I guess it did it's job. Rape is brutal and the scenes were brutal to watch. So while I understand the importance to the story I still will never be comfortable watching them.

I also didn't know that all three films have already been released overseas. I just checked our local art house theater and found The Girl Who Played With Fire is being released here in early August along with Winter's Bone. It's going to be a good week.

I was really disappointed with this. There is such a wealth of things they could have done with the Greek mythology but it is just wasted like much of the rest of the film. I thought the FX were poor considering how much they spent and the plot just seemed to dawdle along.
Hmm...Interesting. I just watched this a few nights ago and I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It was just fun, and the cast was good. I'm actually kinda hoping they make the second one because I'm curious to see where the story goes. To each there own
