it's kind of a hard movie to watch, fyi. a film that is extremely well crafted, directed and has an amazingly disturbing atmosphere, but neither main character you can really root for. nothing else like it.

[Show spoiler]What's in the box isn't important, the journey is. I think you're def right about the two main points being that the father loves the sons and the sons love the father.

Although it's not important to the meaning of the film, how do you interpret the ending? Or do you simply not try to come up with a decision about it, since it isn't essential?
[Show spoiler]My original take was that he was an escaped convict from a gulag who survived in the wild and that the box held his booty. Then, I completely changed my interpretation because I forgot about the ship that is discovered. We know the father was a ship captain, so it seems to make sense that he must have crashed on the island and been marooned there for several years. The box, potentially, held photographs of his family (I've speculated that the concluding photographs in the film are the photos that were in the box) and those things kept him strong. Of course, the main hole is why he was on the island for so long if he was so capable of making a boat and also how he remained muscular if he was marooned. Despite these things, I love the interpretation because it makes the rest of the movie more meaningful to me. The whole film the father is attempting to teach his children how to be independent, which he would have had to be to survive on the island. When he first climbs the tower with the older son, he does so so that his son can see just how removed from civilization this island was. This could possibly explain why no one came to help him and he had to survive himself. But was he on the ship alone? That hardly seems possible.

I think the whole purpose of bringing the kids is to teach them independence along the way and then to show them where he had been the whole time. It was his way of explaining things through actions, not words. I don't think he was hiding the box from the kids, which would be the case if it was booty. If he was hiding it from them, he def wouldn't let them paddle away in the boat for an hour or so when they easily could discover the box. I think he simply wanted to wait till they got home to show the kids and wife. While there are no definitive answers, I really like this interpretation and it furthers what I got out of the film---the relationship between father and son.

Btw, so sad that the elder son died not far from where the latter half of the movie takes place.
Did you read the spoiler in my post? Its about the ending.

Edit: Oh, I see, you did.

[Show spoiler]I havent given much thought to why he was gone and where he was. But yes, obviously he was on the island for some time before, but why? Dunno. Your thought about booty vs family pics is interesting indeed. I noticed a couple things. He burried the box very very deep. If family pics, why do that? Also, he only took one of the small boxes from inside the big box. Why not take all 3? Dunno. He put the box in the boat and wasnt hiding it from the boys....so it must be something he is OK with them seeing. We know he has a casual attitude about cash because he gave his son the wallet stuffed with cash at the diner. Dunno.

Do you mean the actor died there? How? Details please.

Just to play Devils advocate, its the kinda movie I just couldnt take my eyes off the screen. I watched in disbelief at how such a young actress could handle such a strong role. I mean, she carried that film and it deals with some heavy subject matter. I knew five minutes in, this kid is gunna be a star.

You are right about it being well crafted, as the viewer is forced to doubt his own assumptions more than once. Headgames, twists, revenge, reveals. Good stuff.

definitely agree. i have no idea how old she was when she did this film, but i imagine her parents were probably a tad worrisome about the subject matter and whatnot. and i don't know if she won any awards for it (probably not) but she definitely should have if she didn't.

Jason and the Argonauts” 1963 on DVD.

I probably enjoy this film slightly better than 1981’s “Clash of the Titans,” though I think both go together like peas and carrots.

Even on its own merits, “Jason and the Argonauts” is entertaining. It has a decent story with lots of epic moments and fascinating SFX and set pieces. Acting is a bit exaggerated (perhaps even outdated), but still decent. My only big complaints are that the film is dated, and the story feels like it just ended with no real resolution (I assume sequels were planned).

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Superman Returns” on DVD.

This film gets better the more I watch it. And now that I have the originals fresh in my memory, I can easily see how this movie correlates with them. I never realized how closely the new actors adhere (in terms of looks, style, characterization, voices, and individual lines) to the actors of the original film. It’s also very intriguing to see how story elements and themes connect between the new and old films.

All that being said, I still enjoy the action and SFX a lot; they’re probably the best of the series thus far. A lot of the imagery is epic; the photography is wonderful most of the time. The story is pretty decent and has decent characters.

My only complaints are that the film drags in a few spots (including the very very end, which is rather melodramatic) and I think Lois Lane is a bigger idiot than ever.

4/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4.5/5)

I watched the Blu-ray over the weekend. Very good disc from Sony. I agree about the ending, leaves much to still be resolved.

I've thought that too because it looks like one of those films that greatly benefits from not only a theater viewing, but an imax viewing (like 300, for instance). However, I rarely go to the movies--I've only been to three in the past three years and the two this year were the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and its sequel, simply because I'm a huge fan.

I would rather spend the money on a blu than take the risk of seeing a film in theater without having anything to permanently own.

A minimalistic intense thriller, great performances by the two actors and they're almost the only ones.

jhiggy, I agree with squid about Inception, it may be a mistake, though I have no real reason why
I add movies all the time and I'm constantly re-ordering the queue. I think Hard Candy is around 200 something.

Very interesting--although I'm perfectly content with not having a solid answer on the ending, the reason I recommended the film (among others) is I think it'd be interesting to read what ppl think about it, because it alters the way the film is interpreted.

The oldest son was out boating with his friends near the island and drowned. He had received an email inviting him to the film's premier in some country, I think France, but he didn't see it before he went out with his friends. Wikipedia actually has the correct information about it from an article. Basically, he was out with his friends and two drunk girls dared him to jump into the lake (mirroring the beginning of the film). He did so but got a cramp in his leg. He grabbed onto the dinghy but it capsized and he drowned because the cramp prevented him from swimming or treading water.

I distinctly remember all the buzz about her when it came out and I remember reading articles. There was even talk of an Oscar nom.

I'll move it up. Before Sunrise/Sunset are slated for the first week of August, before I go back to NY for 10 days. This week and next week I plan on seeing three more Criterions (Chungking, Paris, Texas, and The Last Emperor) and Shutter Island. The Road has a wait but that's up there too, so it may alter those five. After I get Sunrise/Sunset I will do Hard Candy and Rope, I swear!

Maybe 17. Old enough to handle the role, IMO. But just as she does now, she looked much younger.

Have you not seen Paris Texas before?

Guess what, After all these months of waiting and complaining, A Serious Man arrived today. I know you are not a Coen fan, but I am excited.

Hard Candy has a tiny bit of a Hitchcock feel to it. It isnt Hitchcockian looking, nor does it move like a Hitchcock film, but the viewer is frequently second guessing what he is seeing. Is this scenario what it appears to be, or are we bieng misled?

While it had some funny lines/scenes, the movie really didnt do anything for me... it did have some good cameos in it though...overall, i wouldnt recommend it
