I'm looking to get an hdmi cable for about 35 to 40 feet and was wondering if it would cause signal loss/ deterioration if I got a relatively cheap cable (http://www.amazon.com/INSTEN-Premium.../dp/B001N2IG6Y) I mean I can get prime shipping on that for 28 bucks lol I don't need anything HQ but I would like it to produce well and not deteriorate over that long span.

I have used the 30ft in-wall HDMI cable from Monoprice and a 35ft Vaster Cable from ebay for my projector. They work fine and the picture is excellent. The only problem with the in-wall Monoprice cable is that it is too thick and inflexible. If it pops out when you are adjusting or moving the components, it can damage the pins. That actually happened to me.

There are HDMI extenders that extend the length of HDMI cable that you can use up to a few hundred feet. Their prices vary from passive models ($20) to a few hundred dollars (active models). I bought one for $20 and it really didn't make any difference. Don't waste your money on expensive HDMI cables.

That cable from Amazon looks fine. However, if you don't need 50 feet, don't buy it. If you only need 35 feet, what are you going to do with the extra 15 feet of thick cable? HDMI cable is not like speaker cables that you can cut or hide under the carpet.

well I use a 50ft cat5 cable to get from my router to my Et-system, but I always feel like I have more room not quite sure exactly how long it is since its being run behind all kinds of book cases, chairs, exc.

I think what Big Daddy was trying to get at is that one of the biggest challenge for HDMI cables is distance...HDMI as a transport struggles at longer distance runs. So, using the shortest possible length cable to make your connection is recommended.

Most certified cables will be fine up to around 35'...well at least from various members comments verifying this...further than this you may start to see problems. But Ive heard of several members who use monoprice cables up to the 50ft mark with no problems. But that's not to say it will for everone. Distance is the enemy.

...cat5 has no problems at 50ft.

I worked in home theater sales for about 8 years. We used to say that all cables suck but better ones suck less. What that means is that you are bound to lose quality, it is just for much quality you want to lose.
I took some $20, $150, and a $450 cables (the latter 2 being Audioquest) and hooked them to a TV from the same source (took turns in the output/input) for a customer to see (and for me too). The difference between the $20 and $150 was amazing. The difference to the $450 ones was subtle.
This was from a bluray player (not sure which one) the the first 1080p 50" Pioneer Elite plasma.
You are only as strong as your weakest link.

Hope that helps.

Dr. Awesome, let me just paraphrase the last 1,500 posts of this discussion and point out that you are not getting a "better" picture no matter if you're using a $2 or a $100 HDMI cable...

Bluejeans cables which uses the industry broadcast standard Belden bonded-pair design is the best HDMI wires available and they don't break the bank. They were used for the Olympic games too. And they're made in the U.S.

Belden & Blue Jeans Cable Shatter HDMI Record:

Belden/Bluejeans managed to run 1080p/60 signal through an unamplified 100-foot run of HDMI cable.

I agree ,a little research and you learn that when it comes to digital it works or it doesn’t. Also devices like reed solomon are used for error correction. I worked for brighthouse networks at one time and used a signal meter from veex to test a qam 256 signal .That was a great learning experience and can say for sure that no one can hear or see a difference .This is not to say a cable can't cause the video to pixelate or macroblock but that is a defective cable or damaged not because you didn't pay a premium price.

There is no such thing called 1.3a cable. The 1.3 classification refers to the input/output of the blu-ray player, receiver, and TV. For a couple of additional dollars, buy the cables from Monoprice that are labeled high speed.

The ferrite cores are used to suppress the RFI/EMI noise interference. If you want to learn more about them, go to the bottom of post #1 of the Ground Hum & Ground Loop Isolators thread. I have listed a few reference articles there that describe ferrite cores.

I've tried around ten different HDMI cables and they all have the same picture and audio quality in my opinion. Price doesn't always mean quality.

I have not seen any differences either! Whether you use a very expensive cable or go with a cheap one, I think it will not make a difference in your AV quality! Personally, I prefer cables which have a better build quality like rocketfish cables. That's just me!!

What are the advantages of HDMI 1.4a? I'm looking at buying a Denon AVR and have seen that last year's models (the '10 series) don't support 1.4a. Is it worth paying almost twice the amount for an equivalent model in this year's '11 series AVR line just for 1.4a?

I'm sure someone else will chime in if I'm mistaken, but I'm fairly sure the 1.4 is needed for 3D.

...personally, if its working I would not worry about it.

Cables are either category 1 (standard) or category 2 (high speed)

The version of HDMI really has to do with the HDMI transmit/receiver chip being used...cables just pass along the electrons.
