Assume studios know that BD CE's have no interest in subsidizing players. If for some reason they believe that sub $200 players can massively increase the HD market (e.g. low price = more sales .. basic economics) then they will follow the market. Studio support is fluid... as we saw last summer.

I am just guessing like most of you... but I really feel that price is really king and will ulimately win the day...

How do we convice the BDA to lower SAL prices?
HD-DVD has had a $200+ price advantage since day one, it hasn't had a great effect.

The $99 A2 had a short term effect, but we know these were old stock, if they sold 3rd gen players at this price they really would be shooting themselves in the foot and killing any chance of making money from hardware.

This price ticket can only be used for another 3-6 months, very soon 1.0 BD hardware will be sub $300, soon after sub $200, without the need to artifically subsidize players.

I went to Frys today. There were people browsing the blu-ray section while I was there. None at the hddvd side. Truthfully, I have mostly seen people buying blu-ray movies around here, Best buy, Frys, Circuit City. I don't know why these stores bother carrying the hddvd titles. I also wonder if the sales number for hddvd titles are pumped up; I wonder if they count all the titles that they are bundling with the players or that are giving freely. Hmm.

Ok guys, here is my 2 cents about this weeks #s since ive been sick in bed with the flu and i havent had a chance to give my say about it.

The #s are dissapointing to me. I expected low 80s. However, we have to realize why this happened. 1, sounds like Rat had much lower sales then expected. I was expecting 100k copies sold, sounds like only 70k copies sold. 2, toshiba said they sold 90k players that week. At first, i assumed they were all Walmart, but it was actually only 30k from walmart. The other 60k were from other B&M stores like CC, Best Buy, frys, etc. Toshiba raised the MINNINUM free movies you pick in store (and count in nielsen) from 2 to 3. So, that right there explains why they had a decent week. Had they not done that, it would have been MUCH worse for toshiba but they held onto a only 2:1 loss which im sure they're insanely happy with.

Since the player deals are pretty much done, and the BDA has been doing BOGOs for the past 2 weeks non-stop, i expect we'll be seeing some excellent figures showing up soon.

Who are "they"? Electronics buyers are mobile, armed with information about the latest deals and can go where ever the bargains are. Don't assume the seller characterizes the buyer.

Sorry, I think I had mentioned Wolverine to him previously. I thought it was on schedule for a later 2008 release. Didn't realize it was May 2009 now.

Some days I wonder what the BDA has to do to actually convince people they know what they are doing.

They have won every single week in the last year.

They have a lifetime sell number 55% higher than HD-DVD, and a yearly number ~90% higher.

When HD-DVD buys up Paramount, they come up with the perfect solution in order to still win the Transformers week.

Yet we STILL get people saying "What is Blu-Ray going to do about X?"

What is Blu-Ray going to do? Win.

Some of you people should never run a business. If a McDonald's opened up across the street from your electronics shop you'd start selling burgers because of the threat to your business...

The more accurate analogy would be running a high end electronics shop and a Walmart opens across the street.

Does Blu Ray want to sell to early adopters and the high end, or the mass market?

Right now, it's the former.

More accurate, but not nearly so poignant a summing-up of pervasive pointless panic.

Blu has made some heavy mistakes that are still causing issues, pretending that they have not is not helping anyone.
We still do not have a 1.1 certified player in the stores so that means that everyone who buys a stand alone player this holiday season are being screwed over especially at the prices being charged.
As are those who bought into the stand alones early on.
They are coming yes, but what does that say to others?
PS3 will get the 1.1 update before the end of the year but this should NOT be about the PS3 and unfortunately Sony is making it that way which will hurt things down the line.
Supposedly profile 2.0 requires the player to have one gig of memory available?
Unfortunately the PS3 doesn't have that much so what then?
They will do what is best for the PS3 in the long run because things on the gaming side of business are not capable of carrying the hardware.
Even the BOGOs are coming off more like attempts to pad the numbers to hide something than to try and win over new users.
Week after week we sell many more PS3s than they sell players and that does not even include stand alone players that we sell yet the percentage stays the same even on weeks with great movies compared to nothing.
Do not get me wrong, I am blu all the way but I would like to see some stability and some kind of show of intent.

Stringer STILL never came out and said anything to try and counter his wishy washy quotes that got thrown all around.
This is the Holiday season, the BDA should be making a loud declaration of war.

Profile 2.0 requires at least 1GB of local non-volatile storage, not 1GB of RAM. The smallest disk the PS3 shipped with is 20GB, so it passes this requirement easily.

When the PS3 becomes Profile 1.1 compliant, it will automatically also be Profile 2.0 compliant (the only differences between the two being the amount of local storage and network connectivity).

But yeah, I'd like to see the BDA up the ante somewhat, although they've done pretty well so far.

In October I was being really patient thinking that once November came around and the holidays were in full swing that we'll see something from the BDA. I was wrong, it's almost Thanksgiving and there is still nothing. They just don't care. I think at this point they are happy just to break even on R&D costs and call it quits. Anyways, I'm not buying another Blu-ray disc until CES2008 because at this point it's like flushing money down the toilet.

Excellent response, thank you.
It made no sense that it would be looking for ram at all.

I have watched exclusive after exclusive slip away from the PS3 on the gaming side because of the "ha ha ha they can never beat us, it doesn't matter" attitude.
I love Sony, I have been on the front lines for Sony many many years and will be for many more.
Something has to be done even if it is just for show.
