Hi Penton - had a question about audio. It was recently pointed out to me that Sony's release of The Professional has a 24/96 English track. Can you explain a little bit about that, why the decision to use 24/96, what the source material would have been, etc? There are no plans to go above 24/48 for foley, dialogue, etc., in Hollywood right now are there? Scores are normally done still at either 24/96 or higher or tape aren't they?

I don’t really know about the 10k scanner thing or what they used or how they used it. You have to be a bit careful though when throwing around k’s and scanners because for instance, the Arriscan (for which Hans did the R&D) is a very good scanner but, when it does “6k” scanning it does not originate as a true “6k” optical resolution. It’s really a 3K optical resolution scanner, the resolution of which is doubled to achieve“6k” by offsetting the sensor by a half-pixel in four directions (which will give you more scanner noise in your images) and achieves its 16-bit by double exposing.

I don’t know if the “10k” images you refer to arose from some prototype machine they had access to with a native scanning resolution of 10k.

I know somebody who works at ARRI from another forum and I will try to ask him about the optical resolution of their scanners.

I still think that 10k is a bit over the top but scanning at at least 6k for a nice 4k DCI file and for archival purposes seems to be a good idea once it can be done with less cost than today. Those Sony 4k projectors need to project material that shows the advantage of 4k!

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was clearly reauthored for the individual release since it has a new commentary track. It's too bad Sony didn't take this chance to fix the subtitles and use the theatrical ones approved by Ang Lee. Normally I'm very veeeery happy with Sony releases, but this particular issue has been a disappointment.

Apparently, the Westwood Baptist Church protests at a variety of venues, from Lady Gaga concerts to military funerals. (I was unaware of this, but see here if you want the background.)

But now they've gone one step too far. Yes, they took on Comiccon, and were protested back. See here.

I think my favorite was the protestor holding a poster, "Is this thing on?"

It is applicable in the sense that GLADIATOR was a pre-DI Super-35 film, so it went through an optical conversion to anamorphic release print and as such would not look as good as a modern Super-35 film that underwent a DI. Also, if post-production went down to the wire on it (very common), there's a chance the thousands of release prints were very hastily done and the lab work possibly wasn't the greatest, which would help explain why so many folks remember it looking so damn muddy in theaters. A new scan direct from the negative is obviously not going to have those problems.

Good Gladiator spin. I’ll remind you that the anniversary screening at the end of May in the L.A. area featured a Power Point demonstration and Q & A from one of the original filmmakers.

Techicolor in L.A. and London did the color work.
