I keep reading all this garbage about so and so percent of PS3 owners don't even know that their PS3 is a blu-ray player. My question is is there anyone here or does anyone know anybody who has a PS3 and didn't know it is a blu-ray player? I am getting so tired of hearing fan-boys and executives bringing this up.

Here is a good example of this (not knowing)
A 12-15 year old kid who wants a PS3. Mom/Dad has to buy it for them cuz the kids don't have $500 to drop on such a thing. Nor do they care about movies let alone HD movies at that young age. They just wanted to play the games. Sure the box says blu-ray on it but the kids just wanted it for the games. The parents wouldn't really care either. |

Just a thought, but the lack of awareness is convenient for Sony to stall on making a big BDA move in price-cutting or big studio payout. Sony has shareholders screaming, "You (Sony) subsidized each PS3 but blu-ray isn't taking over when it has a 5 million player advantage". Sony "Well, that's because people were not aware of the blu-ray capabilities, so let's take some money (while biding time) for marketing the PS3 as a blu-ray player and after the holidays and our 'year end', sales of blu-ray will improve".
A little food for thought and a lot of conjecture, but there you have it. It is pretty sad that someone is capable of spending a large chunk of cash without taking a cursory view of its capabilities. I could understand not knowing about PC streaming and Linux, but the lack of blu-ray awareness is really a testament about the general stupidity of the consumer. |

![]() Seriously, I was actually in a break room at work, and heard two young women talking. One said, "Yeah, I got the PS3 for myself last Christmas". I interupted and said, "So, how do you like it?" She actually said this, "I haven't set it up, it was too complicated." ![]() I'm sure you can include her in the group of people who don't know it plays Blu-ray discs. Oh boy! |

from the commercials I thought all it did was make baby dolls talk, eggs explode, and hover. I returned 3 of them before I realized I had bought the 60gb, that lacks the ''monolithe from 2001'' chipset.
what is kind of sad is that I knew it played SACDs but forgot until someone recently reminded me. now I have 5 of those. as for women voting? not a chance. just imagine them voting while on their periods, it would be anarchy. plus their brains are a third the size of ours. IT'S SCIENCE!!!!! |

I don't know anyone who bought a PS3 and didn't know it played blu-rays? Most people bought it for that reason almost more so than buying for games that I know. Kill two birds with one stone. I guess at least if people didn't know that , once they found out, you would hope that would make them go buy some blu-ray movies

I can't believe that PS3 owners wouldn't know about the Blu-ray capabilities!
I think that the big question is: Do they believe that blu-ray movies are better than DVD's? I think the first impression is that blu movies are more expense and DVD's are still the standard to go with. What new PS3 owners don't know is that many of the recent sales put the blu movies cheaper than their DVD counterparts. There are also a lot of PS3 owners that have the basic smaller TV's and live the cash-strapped life. I've also noticed that the majority of PS3 displays in B&M stores don't advertise that they can receive 5 movies in the mail. I talked to a guy looking at a PS3 after the salesman answered questions and I let him know to check online for the offer because there wasn't any info present. And... Who would you consider the owners? There are plenty of younger kids that game and it's really their system... but their parents may not be aware that they could really get a boost from the system to play blu-rays. on a side note, my 3 year old daughter loves her Disney movies... and I'm teaching her the differences of DVD and Blu-ray (she pretty much understands the cases) and she's more than willing to go to any salesman and exclaim, "But I want it on Blu-ray!" |
