Default OK to Buy Brand New Onkyo 876 After 2 Years in Dealer Inventory?

I have been given the opportunity by the local Onkyo dealer (I reside in the Philippines) to purchase an 876 in Silver at a discounted price of around $1000 (a good price considering where I live and how amps are priced here). However, it was admitted to me that it is the black edition that is very popular and that the two silver units available at the low price have been in the dealer's inventory for 2 years (sealed and never opened in their original boxes).

I would just like to ask if this length of time that the receiver is in storage in original packing will have a detrimental effect on quality and performance once I start to use it. Would it be more prone to possible problems?

In short, can or should I take a chance on this (covered by warranty)?

Thank YOU for your help!!

If it's been in the sealed box, it shouldn't be a problem. You should get the full warranty with it, since it's never been sold and used. Go for it...........
Good luck!

As long as the boxes have not got wet, you should be fine.

An aside - I had an old Denon receiver packed up in a box for 7 years. I gave it to my brother-in-law this past winter, and it worked perfectly.

Accessories4less has these for $899.00 + $36.00 ship in black for new.
Just throwing that in IDK if that would cover it to the Philippines though

Default Onkyo TX-SR876 (discounted) or TX-NR808?

Given all your advice above, I want to buy the 876 and mate this to my existing Panasonic AE 2000U projector/Panasonic BD-80 Blu-Ray player and B&W CDM NT 5.1 speakers. My use is/will be strictly video via regular dvd and blu-ray dvd (no network needs; audio cd listening via a Musical Fidelity set-up).

The new Onkyo 808 is not yet available locally but ought to be soon. It looks pretty good on paper and is newly released (June 2010 in the U.S.). I am just intrigued that as early as now, the 808 is already on sale in Amazon (originally $1,099 now going for $754.77).

My worry is that if I wait for the 808, the 876 may no longer available should I decide at a later date that I want the 876 after all. Definitely the 808 will not be on sale upon intro over here.

Should I take the plunge and get the 876 or will the 808 really be worthwhile waiting for?

Sorry if I keep on repeating myself and posting -- I am just so mixed up! Thank you for you help!!

I would get the 876...

I have an onkyo 805 and I kinda wish I had gotten the 875 or 905. As much as I love the 805, I know getting the 875 or 905 would have been steps above.

I don't have any spec in front of me, but I have been disappointed by all the models after the 805 that are in the same level, such as 806, 807 and I don't expect the 808 to be any different.

Get the 876 and don't look back. The 808 is good in its own right, but the 876 is in a different league. Its power supply pulls 9.5A versus the 808's 7.5A and it weighs 10lbs. more than the 808. Add in the fact that the 876 has Reon processing versus the 808's Faroudja chip and there just isn't any comparison. The 876 walks all over the 808.

Default Got the 876 - it is working perfectly!

Got the 876 today and had it installed by professionals -- finally got the sound and balance right after 6 hours! The Audyssey measurements and settings did not sound right so we just fiddled around with the settings and I am very, very happy.

The sound, the clarity, the unforced power, the naturalness is there -- in short, everything I needed and wanted. I am particularly happy with the sound of my classical music blu-ray dvds. They sound divine with the sonics being transformed -- I tried out the live recording of the Berlin Philharmonic with Sir Simon Rattle conducting and Yefim Bronfman on the piano and the balance between piano and orchestra became perfect. With my 11-year old Yamaha 995, the piano got buried in the orchestra amd sounded a bit tubby and muddy -- now the pristine sound and balance came out. The same for blu-ray opera recordings like the Carmen with Jonas Kaufmann -- before I had to use the PCM stereo setting for the HD Master setting sounded wrong with the voices being buried. Not anymore -- now the sound is a revelation.

I play the piano and the sound of a Steinway concert grand in a blu-ray recording is, well, the way a Steinway really sounds!

The difference for loud bombastic blu-rays like Gladiator was at first not that obvious then upon longer viewing and listening one realized the unforced power that is not in-your-face blatant-- so much more natural, detailed, subtle, nuanced but with all the more impact!

As to the video aspect -- all the blu-rays just seemed clearer and more high-def -- but, again, so natural and so right to my eyes!

I will be testing out more blu-rays over the week-end and I am sure that I will experience yet more eye opening and ear-opening revelations. The B&W CDM NT series speakers are perfect partners!

Bravo Onkyo 876!

Jayelae, I'm glad the 876 was all you hoped it would be! When it's calibrated correctly (as you did) the results are amazing!
